HYDE — The venue is changing, but the night will remain the same.
The Clearfield Chapter of The Second Mile will hold its 20th annual
banquet on Sunday evening beginning at 4:30 p.m. In years past, the
banquet was held at the Knights of Columbus, but for the first time
ever, it is being held at Clearfield Area High School.
\”It\’s always a great night,\” said Tim Janocko, head football coach at
Clearfield and a member of The Second Mile\’s board of directors. \”We
moved it to the high school this year. We always have a lot of kids
there, so we thought that was a good move for us.\”
Once again, several big names from the Penn State football team will
be on hand to talk football, socialize, pose for photos and sign
autographs. This year, quarterback Anthony Morelli, wideout Deon
Butler, linebacker Sean Lee and center A.Q. Shipley are expected to
attend.
Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State defensive coordinator and founder of
The Second Mile will be on hand to talk about The Second Mile. Also
attending will be John Palmgren, the video coordinator for Penn State.
A highlight film about the 2006 Outback Bowl champion Nittany Lions
will be shown.
There will also be a guest from enemy territory.
Greg Gattuso, a former Nittany Lion who is now the recruiting
coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh, will be a special guest
at the banquet.
\”Greg Gattuso played on the (1982) Nittany Lion national championship
team. He and Jerry are friends, so when we talked to him about it, he
said yes,\” Janocko said.
Fans who like autographs and memorabilia will want to get their
tickets for the banquet. Silent auction items include a Joe Paterno
autographed football, autographed photos of former Penn State players
and current Pittsburgh Steeler players.
They will also be chancing off a Penn State jersey signed by Paterno
and a framed autographed print.
The Second Mile provides prevention and early intervention programs as
well as community-based services for children in and around
Pennsylvania. The organization is designed to help kids develop
self-confidence while they learn strategies and skills that will lead
them to a future of promise and possibility.
Above all, The Second Mile is designed to challenge young people to
achieve their dreams.
Tickets are $15 and are available at Jim\’s Sports Center or by calling
Janocko at 765-1058.
