BROCKWAY — The scholastic basketball post-season begins next week for the Curwensville teams and the following week for the Clearfield squads, according to the 2007 District 9 Playoffs brackets announced Thursday by the District 9 Basketball Committee chaired by James Manners.
Curwensville\’s girls, seeded No. 2 in Class AA, will host seventh-seed Moniteau (7-14) of the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference West Division Tuesday at 7 p.m. Coach Vic Gearhart\’s Lady Tide will take an 18-4 record into tonight\’s Moshannon Valley League finale at Glendale and plays for the Allegheny Mountain League championship against Elk County Catholic Saturday at 6 p.m. in the DuBois Middle School. Curwensville won the South Division title while ECC, 17-5 for tonight\’s game against Kane, reigned in the North Division.
The Curwensville boys, seeded No. 11 in Class A, will travel to Emporium Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff against sixth-seed Cameron County (17-5) of the Northern Tier League. Coach Matt Wassil\’s Golden Tide is 13-9 for its regular-season finale against MVL foe Glendale tonight in the nightcap of the girls-boys doubleheader at Flinton.
Records in the District 9 League is the first criteria for Class AAA seeding, so both Clearfield teams are No. 3 and will face road tests.
Coach Forrest Campman\’s Bisons (13-8, 6-5 in the league) will visit Bradford (10-11, 8-4) on Feb. 27, with the winner to play top seed St. Marys (15-9, 9-3) on March 3 at 7 p.m. at Clarion University. The Bisons end their home schedule Saturday against Ridgway and go on the road to play Central Mountain Monday at Lock Haven and Punxsutawney on Thursday.
Coach Joey Castagnolo\’s Lady Bisons (14-7, 7-4) may determine their semifinal opponent when they host Punxsutawney (17-3, 10-1) in a makeup game Thursday. Punxsy can lock up the D-9 League crown and the top seed with a win, but a Clearfield victory could make Bradford (16-6, 10-2) the No. 1 seed. The Lady Bisons will travel to play the No. 2 seed at a date and time to be announced later.
The other top seeds are Smethport (19-4) in Class AA boys, Karns City (18-4) in Class AA girls, DuBois Central Catholic (21-1) in Class A boys and Coudersport (22-1) in Class A girls.
Seeding, except for Class AAA girls, was based on records after Tuesday games. A total of 40 teams are entered. Class AA and Class A semifinal games will be played on neutral sites. All championships games are scheduled for Clarion University, Class AA on Friday, March 2, and Class A and Class AAA on Saturday, March 3.
