MARION CENTER —- The Curwensville Area High School wrestling team parlayed four bonus wins with six forfeits for a 59-18 victory over Marion Center Wednesday.
The Golden Tide and Stingers won four bouts apiece, with Derek Brothers at 103 pounds, Brett McCracken at 145 and Jesse Hoover at 171 recording falls and Nick Sipes at 189 posting a technical fall for Curwensville.
Receiving forfeits were Tyler Peters (112), Kristi Newpher (125), Jeff Thomas (130), Justin Johnston (135), Justin Smith (140) and Jarrett Sloppy (160).
\”I was pleased with the matches we wrestled,\” Golden Tide coach Duane Wriglesworth II said. \”McCracken and Hoover looked good, and Nick really looked good on his feet with three different takedowns.\”
Two of Curwensville losses were narrow decisions, Brett Sutika 7-5 to Adam Leasure at 119 and Matt Holland 4-3 to Ray Shaffer at 152.
\”Sutika weighed in at 112 and moved up, and Leasure had height and leverage on him,\” Wriglesworth noted. \”Sutika almost had him on his back two times. And Holland dominated his match but just had trouble at the end. He definitely was the aggressor. It was 2-2 with about 15 seconds to go when Shaffer shot in and caught him off guard for the takedown. He escaped and was really close to securing a winning takedown at the end.\”
Next up for Curwensville is the District 9 Class AA Team Duals at DuBois Saturday. The Golden Tide (5-3) is seeded fifth and will meet No. 4 Port Allegany (13-5) in one 11 a.m. quarterfinal, with the winner to face No. 1 Ridgway (17-1) in the semis. No. 2 Redbank Valley (11-2) awaits the survivor of the other quarterfinal pitting No. 3 Smethport (10-3) against No. 6 Brookville (13-9). The championship will be decided later in the afternoon.
Curwensville goes on the road for two big meets next week, Tuesday against Moshannon Valley and Thursday against Clearfield.
