PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Freshman 141-pounder Matt Kyler of Clearfield improved his record to 18-6, second best on the Army wrestling team, as the Cadets swept Merchant Marine 41-0 and host Rutgers 28-6 on Jan. 13.
Kyler pinned A.J. Melton of Merchant Marine in 1:00 and posted an 11-3 major decision over Kyle Milanese of Rutgers. He leads the Cadets in falls with five and also has five major decisions.
Army, which is 7-3 in duals and 4-0 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, is competing in the 38th annual New York State Intercollegiate Championships Friday and Saturday at the University of Buffalo.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Former Clearfield Area High School wrestler Kyle Keane lost by decision in his only appearance for the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown in the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Duals at the University of Northern Iowa last weekend.
The redshirt freshman 165-pounder bowed 5-3 to Matt Weingart of Chadron State in the Mountain Cats\’ 39-3 win.
UPJ was seeded fifth and finished fifth with a 4-1 record.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Freshman John Lytle of Clearfield won two events as the No. 16-ranked Notre Dame men\’s swimming team defeated Oakland (Mich.) University 181-119 on Jan. 12.
Lytle was first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.16 and the 100 free in :46.7. He also was a member of the 400 free relay quarter that finished second.
Notre Dame then traveled to Cleveland Saturday and swept host Cleveland State 152-91, Duquesne 156-41 and Xavier 168-29 to push its record to 8-0, the best start for the Fighting Irish since the 1974-75 team won its first 10 meets.
Lytle was first against Cleveland State and Xavier and second against Duquesne in the 50 free in :21.45 and turned in a :20.64 leg for the victorious 200 medley relay foursome.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Two Clearfield Area High School graduates, freshman swimmer Nathan Taylor and sophomore diver Ryan Sayers, were pointgetters for the Washington & Jefferson team in a pair of meets last week.
The Presidents won 103-74 at Bethany (W.Va.) on Jan. 10 and lost 163-130 to Grove City on Jan. 13 to remain at .500 with a 5-5 record, including a 1-2 log in the Presidents Athletic Conference.
Taylor had seconds in the 200 individual medley and 200 medley relay against Bethany and a third in the 200 butterfly and a fourth in the 400 individual medley against Grove City.
Sayers earned a second and a third in one-meter diving against Bethany and thirds off both the one-meter and three-meter boards against Grove City.
