ST. MARYS–Anytime you have the opportunity to put a “W” in the books playing at Elk County Catholic’s Aaron J. Straub Memorial Gymnasium and don’t….. well it plain just hurts and cuts away at you.
The Curwensville Lady Tide jumped out to a 17-6 first period lead thanks to Dani Struble being on fire. The Tide senior scorched the nets for 13 points in the opening frame to pace the Tide. Then the Curwensville Ladies decided to give the game to the ECC Lady Crusaders. With a multitude of turnovers and missed easy lay-ups the Tide fell to their hosts 51-47 Friday night at St Mary’s.
Elk County came roaring back to start the second period as Kenny Pisner’s girls went on a 9-0 run and take a 27-25 halftime lead. The Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady Tide 21-8 in that second period as Laken Lenox led the way. The senior guard dropped in 7 points as freshman Emily Detsch and senior Dominque Defrain each chipped in with 5 apiece.
Turnovers and missed opportunities continued in the second half for the Lady Tide as the ECC full court press continued to take it’s toll. ECC outscored Curwensville 24 – 22 in the second half to up it’s record to 2-0 with the win. Detsch took charge in the final period for the Lady Crusaders as the off the bench frosh scored 9 of the teams 11 points. Detsch ended the game with a team high of 16. Following Detsch was Laken Lenox with 9 and Andie Beveridge and Defrain with 8 each.
Dani Struble had another outstanding game for Vic Gearhart’s squad as she poured in 26 to lead all scorers. Ronna Knepp added 8 and Jackie White tossed in 7 as the Lady Tide slip to 1-1 on the young season. The Tide return to action Tuesday night at home against Mo Valley league opponent Harmony.
ECC also won the JV contest running away with a 52-27 victory.
