HOUTZDALE – St. Barbara’s National Catholic Church in Houtzdale celebrated a Blue Mass Sunday to honor area military, police, fire and emergency personnel. Enduring a drizzling rain and an occasional downpour, local dignitaries, business men and women and the public donned raingear and umbrellas to honor our heroes.
The Rev. Father Ramzi R. Musallam spoke about patriotism, love for our fellow human beings and the fact that peace needs to begin at home, by
showing love and service to one another. Father Musallam thanked the honorees for their service and protection and answering their call to
duty.
Several letters and citations were read by representatives from the offices of several lawmakers.
A letter from Gov. Ed Rendell expressing his gratitude to the people in “blue” and regrets on his absence was read by Don Watson with the Houtzdale American Legion. Deputy Attorney General and former Blair County District Attorney Dave Gorman spoke on behalf of Attorney General Tom Corbett.
C. Alan Walker read remarks by President George W. Bush, thanking the military, police, firefighters, and all first responders for their dedication, loyalty and bravery.
