Golden Tide Place Fifth, Crown a Champ, and Send Six to Regionals

Clarion — The Curwensville Golden Tide wrestling team placed fifth out of 14 teams, crowned one champion, and most importantly advanced six out of 10 wrestlers onto the North West Regional Tournament in Sharon next weekend while competing Saturday at the District 9 AA Championships inside the Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium on the campus of Clarion University.

The Brookville Raiders ran away with the team title, their 10th in 12 years. The Raiders scored 226 team points with four champions and moved 11 wrestlers through to the regionals. Brockway was a distant second with 156.5 points, but matched the Raiders with four champs.

Claiming his first district title for the Tide was 152 pound sophomore Logan Aughenbaugh. Aughenbaugh (22-6), the number two seed, cruised to the finals with 6-1 and 8-1 wins. Once there he shut out Cranberry’s Devyn Fleeger (22-14) 5-0. Aughenbaugh scored a first period takedown and took that 2-0 lead into the final period after riding Fleeger the entire second period. A third period reversal and a late stall point set the final at 5-0.

Carfley, a returning district champion, was beaten 3-0 by Brockway’s Weston Pisarchick (30-2) in the finals. Pisarchick scored what turned out to be the winning points 22 seconds into the opening period with his takedown. A third period escape set the final score.

At 132, Fegert defeated Daniel DeLong (15-14) by a 9-3 in the consolation finals to earn his bronze medal. He was defeated 2-1 in Saturday morning’s semifinal by Parker Pisarchick (27-9) of Brockway.

Alex Shaffer was pinned in the semifinals by eventual champions Seth Stewart (29-6) of Brockway at 189, but then pinned his way through the wrestlebacks to get his third place. HIs final being a 54 second fall over Port Allegany’s Juuso Young (19-11).

Oswayo Valley’s Andrew Coriaty (14-3) won 6-1 over Brady in their consolation final, and Zach Shaffer was majored 12-0 by Brookville’s Brecken Cieliski (23-11) in his consy final.
