Sandy Twp. Police Seeking Public’s Assistance in Scam Investigation

DUBOIS – Sandy Township police are seeking the public’s assistance with its investigation into a recent scam incident.

According to a department-issued news release, a Caine Road resident received a phone call Feb. 15 from a male claiming to be an attorney.

He advised her grandson had been in a crash, and the driver of the other vehicle was seriously injured. They identified her grandson by name, stating he’d been arrested and needed $8,500 bail.

Moments later, the resident was called by a second male claiming to be her grandson. He said he was injured and in a lot of trouble but told her not to tell anyone and to please pay the money.

At approximately 2 p.m., police say a Hispanic male showed up with an envelope and collected the money. He was around 5 feet, 11 inches tall, 170 pounds and 30 – 40 years old.

After this, the original caller contacted the resident, claiming that the other driver had died and her grandson needed an additional $50,000 for bail.
