CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Bison boys basketball team’s fast start was not enough to guide them to a victory as the visiting Tyrone Golden Eagles were able to go on the road to pick up the season sweep of the Bison Friday, 67-54.
Clearfield got out to a fast start with Cole Miller starting the game red hot as he poured in 17 of his game-high 28 in the first quarter. Miller scored all of the Bison points in the period to lead them out to a 17-10 lead.
Tyrone had a solid response in the second as they scored 22 in the quarter, while holding Clearfield to just 10. Landen DeHaas was a crucial go-to scorer for the Golden Eagles throughout the game as he scored 12 of his team-high 25 in the second period. With a ferocious comeback in the second quarter, Tyrone took a 32-27 lead into the break over Clearfield.
From there, The Tyrone defense continued to halt the Clearfield offense as they held the Bison to just nine points in the third quarter. Tyrone continued to score the ball well in the third with 13 points as Tyrone saw six players hit the scoring column in the third period. After three, Tyrone had extended their lead to nine as they hung onto a 45-36 advantage.
The fourth quarter was one in which Clearfield got the offense back on track, but the Tyrone offense exploded for another 22 points in the final period to come away with a 67-54 win.
Clearfield featured a second scorer with double-figures in the contest as Ryan Gearhart scored 13 points, with two three pointers to his credit. Andon Greslick followed up Gearhart with five points, while teammates Isaak Way and Luke Pallo each added four points for the Bison.
For Tyrone, three additional players joined DeHaas in double-figures as Ross Gampe added 11 and Keegan Gwin and Cortlind Rhodes each chipped in 10 points. Jake Johnson and Zach Legars followed up Rhodes and Gwinn as the duo each added five tallies. Rounding out the scoring for the Golden Eagles was David Lang who split a pair of free throws in the game.
The loss drops Clearfield to 9-6 on the season, while Mountain League foe Tyrone improves their record to 12-5 on the season. Clearfield hopes to snap a recent three game skid Saturday afternoon (January 29) as they travel to Philipsburg to take on the Mounties of Philipsburg-Osceola in a Mountain League clash that was originally scheduled for January 18, but was rescheduled because of weather.
The contest will mark the second game of the season for the two schools as Clearfield defeated P-O at home back on December 13, 46-40. The varsity contest is set for 4:00 p.m.
