Bison Win Battle of Unbeatens, Raise Record to 6-0

Clearfield has four semifinalists

TYRONE — Fresh off of their team title at the Mid-Winter Mayhem over the weekend, the undefeated Clearfield Bison wrestling team once again took the road Tuesday night and came home with a big road win over the Tyrone Golden Eagles, 44-24. With the win the Bison raised their record to 6-0, while the hosts were dropped from the unbeaten ranks and are now 5-1.

The back and forth match had four lead changes, but the Murderers Row at the bottom of the Bison line-up once again proved to be the difference as the Bison scored the last 23 points to go from a three point deficit to a 20-point victory.

Just like the Bison’s last dual against Bald Eagle Area, this match started at 106 and saw no forfeits, a rarity these days in local wrestling action.

The teams traded falls to start the match as Tyrone’s Korry Walls (11-5) pinned Xavier Lutz at 106 and Evan Davis (10-5) returned the favor, knotting the team score at six, with his fall over Logan Rumberger at 113.

Adam Rougeux gave the Bison an early lead with his overtime win

Adam Rougeux (5-6) gave the Bison their first lead of the night when he earned an overtime sudden victory win 10-8 over the Golden Eagle’s Remington Fleck at 120.

Freshman Brady Collins (14-2) continued his outstanding season thus far with a 15 second fall over Elijah Walk to up the Bison lead to 15-6.

The hosts then ran off three straight wins to first tie the Bison at 15, then take the lead at 21-15.

Ashton Sipes (15-5) hit a standing cradle and pinned Nolan Barr at 132, Lucas Walk (7-5) beat Ty Aveni 8-2 at 138, and Reese Wood (13-5) also picked up a fall over Patrick Knepp, in the line-up for injured starter Will Domico, at 145.

Luke Freeland (11-4) bumped up to 152 and temporarily stopped the Tyrone momentum with a first period fall over Brody Klein, tying the match at 21.

Tyrone countered with an Andrew Weaver (7-6) win over Karson Kline at 160, and the hosts were back on top 24-21.

That’s when the Bison heavyweights took over. Not one match went the distance over the final four as the Bison got a tech fall and three first period falls from their big boys.

At 172, Mark McGonigal (13-3) put the Bison out front to stay, 26-24, with his 17-1 tech fall over Zach Lash.

Carter Chamberlain (10-4) at 189 had a fall in 1:10, Hayden Kovalick’s (14-1) match lasted a mere 20 seconds at 215, and 285 pounder Oliver Billotte (11-0) finished it all up in a minute and 21 seconds.

Next up for the Bison is a return to the Artur J. Weis Gymnasium on Thursday night when they host the 4-0 Flying Dutch of St. Marys.
