CLEARFIELD – Emergency financial relief is coming to 79 Clearfield County businesses and social clubs adversely affected by Gov. Tom Wolf’s temporary COVID-19 restrictions.

On Dec. 10, Wolf suspended indoor dining for a three-week period, beginning Dec. 12 and ending Jan. 4, according to previously-published reports.

Entertainment venues, like movie theaters, were forced to temporarily close and indoor retail stores to limit their capacity to 50 percent.

Gyms and fitness centers were also directed to stop indoor operations for three weeks. The restrictions are currently set to expire at 8 a.m. Jan. 4.

In light of the shutdown, County Commissioners Tony Scotto, board chairman, John A. Sobel and Dave Glass on Tuesday awarded emergency funds to 79 businesses and clubs, totaling $237,000.

A complete list of the grant recipients is as follows:

Leftover CARES Funds, Glass explained, were used to reimburse the county for allowable COVID-19 expenses, like wages/benefits for jail guards and sheriff deputies, in the 2020 budget.

Then, he said the county awarded the $3,000 emergency grants from the general fund, which eliminated CARES Act restrictions and allowed the county to help more businesses as well as the social clubs.

He said restaurants, bars and social clubs were only eligible if they have complied with Wolf’s temporary restrictions, and also agreed to remain closed (for dine-in services) through Jan. 4.

“I’m very pleased with the number of restaurants that appear to be abiding,” Glass said, “and that’s who we wanted to help. We wanted to reward them for doing the right thing.”

Commissioner John A. Sobel said any restaurants, which restricted business to take-out only or closed down altogether, are the “hardest hit” right now. “We’re glad to be able to help, especially this time of the year.”
