Lady Cardinals Use Third Quarter Momentum to Defeat Lady Tide

CURWENSVILLE — Friday’s victory against Johnsonburg gave the Curwensville Lady Tide a much needed boost in confidence heading into the next-to-last week of the season.  The week began inside Patton Hall as the DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) Lady Cardinals came to the hardwood for an AML contest.  The night began a bit earlier than what was originally slated, as it became a 6:30 p.m. tip off for varsity action, as both squads were lower on numbers and no junior varsity contest was played.

Despite a strong effort in the first half, Curwensville had early struggles in the third quarter, and ultimately fell flat in the final quarter, falling to the visitors, 38-26.

The opening quarter was slower paced, with both squads playing a close eight minutes.  The Lady Cardinals finished with a basket advantage, 7-5, with the Tide taking possession to start the second stanza.  Curwensville found a bit of momentum on a few strong baskets from Tarah Jacobson, and a plus-one opportunity from Brianna Swindell.  The Tide kept it close, but went into the locker room down by five, 17-12.

When the second half started, that 5-point gap quickly doubled, forcing the Tide sidelines to call time out after DCC. pushed the lead to 22-12.

Neither team had an advantage for the remainder of the quarter, each scoring 11 points, but Curwensville had the ball again entering the final stanza.

Unfortunately that final quarter spelled doom for the Tide, as turnovers and missed opportunities limited the home squad to only three points in the final eight minutes.

DuBois Central Catholic was paced in scoring by Maia Cogley with 11 points, while Martina Swalligan added in another 10.  The Lady Cardinals only had 14 baskets from the floor, while their defense held the Lady Tide to just nine field goals.  Curwensville struggled with turnovers, which led to many opportunities on the opposite end of the hardwood.

Swindell finished the night as the high scorer for Curwensville with seven points, while Alyssa Bakaysa added in another six.

Curwensville (4-14) has one last road game on the season on Wednesday when they travel to Glendale.  The Lady Vikings won the prior contest, 58-13, on January 8 in Patton Hall.  Varsity action is tentatively set for 7:30 p.m.
