HYDE — It has been quite the week for the Lady Bison of Clearfield. It started with a down-to-the-wire victory over Curwensville on Monday, then a day later a tough road trip against Tyrone. With the week, and the season, winding down, Clearfield returned back home to the Bison Gym for another Mountain League tilt, this time against the Lady Rams of Penns Valley.
This game saw Clearfield outscore their point output of the prior two games, but the Rams were outscoring the Bison in each quarter, rolling to a 69-51 victory at night’s end.
Clearfield fell behind early, but kept it close in the opening quarter, 11-7. It was the second quarter where the home squad began falling a bit behind, as three of Penns Valley’s starting five combined for all except four of the team’s 18 points in the quarter, taking a 29-20 advantage heading into the break.
But the third quarter is when the Lady Bison ran into a buzzsaw in a blue uniform. Penns Valley’s Hannah Montminy could do no wrong in the third quarter when she bucketed 13 of her game-high 26 points in the frame. Her only missed buckets came on a pair of free throws. Clearfield kept it close in the quarter, but never could close the gap on their opposition.
Leah Beten also hit double digits for the Lady Rams, draining 16 points, while Tesa Miller led the Lady Bison with 18 points. Megan Durandetta added in another 10 for Clearfield.
Both teams biggest struggle on the night came at the free throw line. Of Penns Valley’s 15 trips to the charity stripe, only six shots went in, a 40 percent ratio. Clearfield finished slightly better, going 14 for 22 at the line.
Clearfield (5-15) has two final games remaining on the season, both coming next week. Their final away game is on Wednesday, Feb. 5, against the Lady Dragons of Central. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m. with varsity action to follow.
