Bison Grapplers Easily Slay The Scarlet Dragons

MARTINSBURG — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team traveled to Martinsburg to face the Central Scarlet Dragons (5-6) in a Mountain League match-up.

In the end, the Bison (8-5, 4-1 ML) made short work of their hosts by a lopsided 56-15 final.

The Bison picked up four falls, three of which were in the first period, four forfeits, a tech fall and a regular decision.

The hosts won four matches, but only picked up bonus points, by fall, in one match.

The dual started at 170, where Clearfield’s Mark McGonigal raised his record to 19-3 by forfeit.

Hayden Kavolick (16-8) at 182 quickly made the score 12-0 after a pin in 1:48 over Michael Fowkes (5-4).

Scarlet Dragon Ethan Eicher (9-6) got the hosts on the board with a 5-2 win over Brett Zattoni (13-11) at 195. After a scoreless first period, Eicher picked up two takedowns in the middle period for the difference.

Matt Bailor had a 32 second fall for the Bison

At 220, Matt Bailor (2-4) only needed 32 seconds with Sam Eger (2-7) to pick up his first career varsity win on the mat, extending the Bison lead to 18-3.

Oliver Billotte bumped up to heavyweight in Jon Doran’s absence and picked up win number 21, against three losses by forfeit.

Evan Davis (16-7) tied Bailor for quickest pin of the night when he also needed 32 seconds to dispose of Jaxon Matthews (8-7).

At 113, the Dragons finally got back on the scoreboard after Tyler Beisinger (8-4) outlasted Derrick Bender (6-14) 9-8. Bender was up 8-7 after two periods, but gave up a reversal to Beisinger, who then held on for the win making the score 30-6.

When Central’s best wrestler Ian Crouch (15-3) bumped up to 126, Bison 120 pounder Nolan Barr (15-7) received a forfeit.

Crouch then pinned Jason Plubell (3-9) in 2:58 after building up a 10-0 lead.

132 pounder Justin Hand evened his season record at 5-5 with a second period fall over Luke Knisely (1-7).

Wyatt Reorda (1-0) then received the fourth and final forfeit for the Bison to up the score to 48-12.

At 145 Luke Freeland (15-7) continued his hot streak from the Bison Duals by running up a 13-0 first period and only needing 15 seconds of the second period to complete a 15-0 tech fall over Tyler Hess (4-10).

Karson Kline (16-7) then made his first ever appearance at 152 a successful one with a 10-4 win over Tanner Hall (7-9). That closed out the Bison scoring at 56, their third highest output of the year.

Lane Kocher (4-8) then defeated Bison JD Graham (4-6) 7-3 on the strength of four penalty points, all in the second period, due to locked hands.

Clearfield swept the evening by winning the Junior High match by a 66-9 blow out.

The Bison will be off until the weekend when they will take place in the grueling two day 30+ team 5th Annual Ultimate Warrior Tournament at West Branch High School.
