Horrible Second Half Dooms Golden Tide In 45-30 Loss To DCC

CURWENSVILLE – The DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) boys basketball team picked up its second victory of the 2019-20 season Tuesday night at Curwensville, winning over the Golden Tide 45-30.

The Tide played well through the first 16 minutes, even though trailing 14-8 after one period. but then going into intermission all knotted at 24-24.

However, the second half was a different story for Curwensville, as they scored only six total points, four in the third quarter and just two in the fourth.

A perplexed Tide head coach Matt Wassil said afterwards, “I am truly, right at this moment, at a loss for words. How we played so well in the first half, and then to play that poorly in the second half with all the poor decisions on a lot of possessions. At times we threw the ball places that didn’t make sense to me.”

The Cardinals (2-8) jumped out to an 8-3 first quarter lead thanks to three points each by Harrison Starr and Ethan Kness.

Curwensville sophomore Ty Terry pulled his squad to within two, 8-6, at the 2:10 mark of the first before DCC ended the quarter up 14-8.

It was then the Terry show in the second quarter as the Curwensville guard was on fire, scoring 14 of his 17 on the night that included four three-pointers.

Terry, in just approximately 48 seconds, made good on three straight treys that gave Curwensville a 24-20 edge with 1:52 to go before halftime.

DCC scored the last four points though, to have the game all even at 24 going into the locker room.

Neither squad was too potent in the third eight minutes, but the Cardinals did manage to out point Curwensville 8-4 to go into the final frame up by four at 32-28.

Then an 11-0 run to start the fourth basically sealed the deal on the Golden Tide as DCC now extended its margin to 43-28 with 3:25 remaining in the contest.

In fact the Tide’s, who didn’t make a fourth quarter field goal, first and only tallies came on free throws by Adam Miller with 2:34 to go.

Wassil then commented, “We got settled into hitting threes in the first half, but in the second they just wouldn’t go down for us. And turnovers killed us the second half. You know you dribble, you pass, you catch and shoot and then go on from there.”

In the junior varsity game it was DCC defeating the Tide by a score of 41-26.

The Tide (1-6) play Harmony on Friday at home in Moshannon Valley League action with the JV game starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
