HYDE – The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks girls basketball team improved its record to 7-2 on the season with a 48-27 win over Clearfield Friday night on the Lady Bison home floor.
It didn’t start out so easy for Punxsutawney as Clearfield took a 9-4 lead into the second quarter thanks to seven points by senior Tesa Miller in the first eight minutes of action.
The Lady Bison hung tough midway through the second frame, leading 14-13 on a free throw by sophomore Emma Hipps with 3:35 to play before halftime.
Then coldness came for Clearfield, not scoring another point until 1:38 was remaining in the third quarter on a three point bucket by Hipps as the Lady Chucks marched out to a 38-20 lead heading into the fourth stanza.
Punxsutawney also won the fourth quarter, 10-7, to pick up the 21 point margin victory.
Miller paced the Clearfield offense with 14 points.
Punxsutawney was led by Sarah Weaver with 23 tallies that included dropping in five three-pointers. Freshman Chloe Presloid added 12 points, hitting three treys. On the night the Lady Chucks drained nine from beyond the arc.
The junior varsity contest was also won by Punxsutawney, defeating the young Lady Bison by a score of 39-24. Kirstie Van Tassel had nine points for Clearfield.
Clearfield (2-6) is home once again on Monday evening when they play St. Joseph’s Academy. Tip-off is at 7 pm as there will be no JV game.
