Bison Matmen Place Eighth at Top Hat Tourney

WILLIAMSPORT – The Clearfield Bison had a successful first weekend of wrestling at the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament. Overall, they placed in seven weight classes, led by sophomore bronze medalist Oliver Billotte (4-1) at 220.

Billotte had a very impressive first period fall over East Stroudsburg Area North’s Nick Paredes to reach the semifinals Saturday morning, flattening his shoulders to the mat in just 1:02. But in the semifinals, he was then pinned by eventual champion Cameron Wood of Montoursville in the first period. This didn’t deter Billotte though, as he garnered two more first period falls to take third place, pinning Central Mountain’s Gage Sutliff in the consolation semifinals and Mifflinburg’s Quintin Doane in the consolation finals.

Six other wrestlers brought home medals for the Bison as well. Freshman Evan Davis (4-2) placed 5th at 106. Sophomore Karson Kline (3-2) took 7th at 138. Sophomores Mark McGonigal (3-2) placed 5th at 170 and Hayden Kavolick (4-2) took 7th at 182. Senior Brett Zattoni (4-2) placed 4th at 195, and senior Jon Doran (3-3) placed 6th at 285.

The Clearfield Bison managed to wrack up 125 points in the tourney to place 8th overall, tying their showing in 2017 and being their best overall performance since 2015. They did this on the back of 17 pins and 109 scored points through the tournament.

This year’s team title went to the Saucon Valley who scored 259 points, 59 points above the runner-ups Central Mountain. 

The Battling Bison are set to travel to Bald Eagle Tuesday night to test their grit. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
