Campus Corner: I. Swanson Breaks Three PS Altoona Records; Bietz Registers Five Firsts as PS Behrend Reigns

MEN’S SWIMMING

OBERLIN, Ohio — Freshman Isaac Swanson (Clearfield) continued his record-breaking pace for Penn State Altoona by setting three marks at the 12-team Oberlin Invitational that ran from Friday through Sunday.

He broke his own record (54.60 seconds) in the 100-yard backstroke with a 53.87 effort for second place and rewrote the standards for two events in which he competed for the first time, touching the wall at 1:57.25 for second place in the 200 back and 22.12 for sixth in the 50 freestyle.

Swanson swam in four relays, turning in a 22.16 anchor for the fifth-place 200 free team (1:30.95) and leading off with a 48.67 leg for the seventh-place 400 foursome (3:20.58), a 24.90 split for the seventh-place 200 medley quartet (1:41.72) and a 1:46.51 for the 10th-place 800 free team (8:01.28).

With 409 points, the Lions finished ninth in the 12-team invitational.

OBERLIN, Ohio — Sophomore Chase Bietz (Clearfield) was one of the top point-getters with one first and two seconds in individual races while swimming on four victorious relay teams as Penn State Behrend amassed 1264.5 points to win the three-day Oberlin Invitational over the weekend.

He touched first in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.91, just .04 off his school record, and second in the 100 breaststroke in 57.05 and 200 breaststroke in 2:06.27, all season-best times.

In the relays, Bietz led off for the three freestyle foursomes with splits of 21.04 in the 200 (1:24.69), 46.42 in the 400 (3:08.94) and 1:41.91 in the 800 (6:56.35) and turned in a 57.74 breaststroke split in the 400 medley (3:29.89).

Ashland (Ohio) was runner-up to the Lions in the 12-team meet with 1,082 points.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Sophomore Paige Mikesell (Clearfield) hit NCAA Division II ‘B’ cut times in three events at Cleveland State’s eighth annual Magnus Cup Friday through Sunday and then shared Indiana University of Pennsylvania Women’s Athlete of the Week honors with teammate Rachel Johnson, according to Monday’s announcement by the sports information office.

Mikesell placed second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.73, third in the 100 butterfly in 55.02 and fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.16 after touching in 2:02.82 in the preliminaries.

The IM and 100 fly times are her fastest of the season.

She also was instrumental in top-10 finishes by the Crimson Hawks in three relays, posting a 55.03 fly leg for the seventh-place 400 medley team (3:51.09), a 23.69 split for the eighth-place 200 free foursome (1:36.91) and a 52.02 leadoff leg for the 400 free quartet (3:34.79).

IUP totaled 409 points to finish sixth in the 12-team meet.

ASHLAND, Va. — Sophomore Sydney Coval (Clearfield) was one of four Frostburg (Md.) State natators with top-20 finishes at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon Saturday and Sunday.

She placed 20th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 21:14.31 and was on two Bobcat relay teams that placed 19th, registering a 32.57 third split in the 200 free (1:59.50) and a 28.25 anchor leg in the 200 medley (2:13.51).

Coval also was 29th in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.85 and 40th in the 500 free in 6:03.28, both season-best times, and swam a 1:10.91 fly leg for the 400 medley foursome that that finished 21st in 4:59.13.

She touched first in the 100 fly in 1:15.28 when the Bobcats opened the season with a 145-63 win at Gallaudet (Washington, D.C.) Oct. 5, adding seconds in both the 100 free in 1:08.27 and 1,000 free in 13:12.74.

In the Chatham Invitational Oct. 26, Coval was sixth in the 200 free (2:31.95) and 100 fly (1:13.65) and seventh in the 500 free (6:24.81) and swam on the ‘B’ 200 free and 200 medley teams that placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Frostburg State had 554 points for third place in the four-team meet.

The Bobcats lost their home opener to Elizabethtown, 151-107, on Nov. 2, and Coval logged a third in the 200-meter fly (3:13.62) and 400 free (5:37.23) and swam on the ‘B’ 200 medley and 400 free foursomes that wound up fourth.

In a 118-63 loss to visiting York Nov. 8, Coval placed third in the 100-meter fly (1:23.11) and fourth in the 800 free (11:29.83) in addition to swimming the fly leg for the ‘B’ 200 medley quartet that finished fourth.

On Nov. 9, the Bobcats dropped their Mountain East Conference opener at West Virginia Wesleyan, 140-53, and Coval was fourth in the 500-yard free (6:20.51) and fifth in the 200 free (2:24.93) before swimming the fly leg for the ‘B’ 400 medley team that placed fourth.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

GREENSBURG — Senior forward/center Cody Spaid (Clearfield) was a force inside with a game-high 12 rebounds and three of Pitt-Greensburg’s five blocked shots as the Bobcats (2-1) downed Bethany (W.Va.) 81-60 in non-conference action Saturday.

He also scored nine points by making four of six shots, one a three-pointer.

His season totals show 34 points, an 11.3 average, with 26 rebounds and four blocks, both team highs. He is second in assists with seven and has two steals.

WRESTLING

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Junior Josiah McClarren (Clearfield) edged Chad Tracy 3-2 at 157 pounds in Lycoming’s 24-13 win over Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) at the John Carroll Duals Sunday.

The Warriors (4-1) also defeated Pitt-Bradford 48-10 and Urbana (Ohio) 31-18 around a 22-18 loss to John Carroll.

McClarren’s first dual meet outing raised his record to 4-5.
