WOMEN’S SWIMMING
SHIPPENSBURG — Sophomore Paige Mikesell (Clearfield) was the top point-getter for Indiana University of Pennsylvania last season, and she got off to a strong start for the 2019-20 team by winning both butterfly races, swimming the fly leg for the victorious 200-yard medley foursome and leading off for the 200 freestyle quartet that placed second in a tough 133-129 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Shippensburg last Wednesday.
Mikesell touched in 27.02 seconds in the 50 fly and 59.47 in the 100 fly.
She turned in a 26.66 split for the 200 medley team that won in 1:53.14 and a 25.66 split for the 200 free team that posted a 1:44.41.
She was named the 2018-19 Crimson Hawk Women’s Freshman of the Year by the IUP Athletic Department after an outstanding rookie season highlighted by three individual freshman school records, two program relay records, nine individual wins among 13 top-three finishes and six relay wins among 10 top-two finishes. The 400 medley relay team placed 13th at the NCAA Division II Championships to achieve All-American Honorable Mention honors.
Mikesell’s success in butterfly, freestyle and individual medley events as well as freestyle and medley relay races resulted in a team-high 298 points and team MVP recognition.
Senior Claire Mikesell (Clearfield) is redshirting this season.
She set school records in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke, the latter at the NCAA Division II Championships where her 2:14.80 clocking in the prelims was good for third place and first team All-American laurels. She finished seventh in the finals with a 2:15.57 time.
The Mikesell sisters were two of five Crimson Hawk swimmers named to the 2018-19 College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Scholar All-American team that recognizes students who achieved a Grade Point Average of 3.5 or higher and competed in the national championships.
Paige and Clair earned GPAs of 4.00 and 3.82, respectively.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
INDIANA — Freshman midfielder Alayna Ryan (Clearfield) assisted on the first goal and then recorded her first collegiate goal that proved to be the winner as Indiana University of Pennsylvania nipped visiting Mercyhurst 2-1 at the South Campus Field Saturday afternoon.
She headed a pass over the Laker defense that Mahogany Willis sent into the net just 3:56 into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division game.
At the 14:26 mark, a pass from Taylor Karan found Ryan inside of her defender and in on net, and she bent her shot into the far corner.
She logged one shot, on goal, in the Crimson Hawks’ 3-0 PSAC-West home loss to Seton Hill.
Ryan has started the last five games after subbing in the first three for the Crimson Hawks, who are 4-4 with a 3-4 PSAC-West start.
She has one goal and three assists for five points, second to Willis’ 21. Five of her seven shots have been on goal.

ERIE — Sophomore goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) picked up two more wins for Penn State Behrend against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponents last week to pad her record to 3-1-2 in six starts.
She made two saves against visiting D’Youville in a 2-1 double-overtime victory on Tuesday and had three saves against Franciscan in another 2-1 outcome at Steubenville, Ohio, Saturday.
The Lions are 2-0-1 in the AMCC and 3-5-2 overall.
Jones, who has registered 19 saves, lowered her goals against average (GAA) to 1.52 for 593.39 minutes in six games.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
FAIRVIEW — Freshman Jeremiah Vezza (Clearfield) ran a personal-best 29:15.5 over the Pleasant Ridge Park 8K course in the Gannon-Mercyhurst Invitational Saturday morning.
His time ranked 15th among the 58 runners from eight schools but did not count in Gannon’s team score, as five Golden Knights finished in the top 12 for a winning total of 28 points.

FOOTBALL
LOCK HAVEN — Senior linebacker Christian Rumery (Clearfield) saw action for Lock Haven Thursday night when Shepherd (W.Va.) handed the Bald Eagles a 62-28 setback in front of 659 fans at Hubert Jack Stadium.
Rumery has two solo tackles and four assists in his five appearances.
Lock Haven fell to 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division and 1-4 overall.
