NEW WILMINGTON — Freshman Abby Laborde (Clearfield) got off to a good start for Geneva with a time of 25:28.52 over the Westminster course to help the Tornadoes finished second at the season-opening Fisher Invitational Friday evening.
Laborde was the third Geneva runner to cross the finish line and placed 12th among the 126 starters from 11 schools.
The Tornadoes tied Waynesburg with 61 points, but the defending Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion claimed the meet title via a tiebreaker.

FOOTBALL
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan redshirt sophomore wide receiver Ryan Lezzer (Clearfield) suffered an ACL injury during the preseason that will sideline him for the second year in a row.
The 5-11, 190-pounder, who redshirted in 2017, had recovered from an injury to his other knee that prevented him from seeing action for the Broncos last all.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Freshman Isaac Rumery (Clearfield) is one of three rookies among the six quarterbacks on the Penn State roster.
The Nittany Lions launched their season in most impressive fashion Saturday afternoon, blitzing outmanned Idaho 79-7.
The home crowd of 104,527 saw the No. 15-ranked Lions’ offense mass 673 total yards, which ranks third in program history, and the defense limit the Vandals to five first downs and 145 yards, including just four net on the ground.

LOCK HAVEN — Senior Christian Rumery (Clearfield) has returned to the Lock Haven squad after sitting out last season.
He is listed as a 6-0, 235-pound linebacker for the Bald Eagles, who will open Thursday by hosting Lincoln in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Hubert Jack Stadium.

WILLIAMSPORT — Senior Nate Lash (Clearfield) will play on the offensive line for Lycoming, which will visit Selinsgrove Saturday to meet Susquehanna in the annual Stagg Hat Trophy Game.
Lash, a 6-2, 240-pounder, saw action on offense in four games last season after playing in two games on defense as a sophomore.

GROVE CITY — Freshman Noah Von Gunden (Curwensville) is a 5-7, 155-pound corner back for Grove City, which travels to Huntingdon Saturday to take on Juniata in the lidlifter for both teams.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
ERIE — Goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) is one of 23 returnees from an eighth consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship team who make Penn State Behrend the coaches’ choice to finish on top again this fall.
Jones was named to the All-AMCC Third Team after starting every game between the pipes for the Lions, who wound up 13-7 after losing to Tufts in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
She recorded 54 saves and registered a goals-against average of 0.82, posting eight shutouts and combining to blank opponents in four other games.
Jones did not play in the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by the Lions, who lost 3-0 to Nazareth Friday and 2-0 to Kenyon (Ohio) Saturday.

GREENSBURG — Sophomore Alex Coval (Clearfield) is a member of the Seton Hill team that begins the season in the Doug Watts Open at Edinboro Saturday.
His best time in three races last year was 3:16.9.

INDIANA — Freshman Alayna Ryan (Clearfield) is a forward/midfielder on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania team that opens with a home game against Glenville (W.Va.) State Saturday afternoon.

GOLF
DUBOIS — Senior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) and sophomore Alec Graham (Clearfield) will be counted on to play key roles for the Penn State co-ed team that is the reigning Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference champion.
Orsich earned All-PSUAC honors with an 82-81-163 and Graham contributed an 82-87-169 on the Penn State Blue Course as the Lions successfully defended the title they won in 2017 when Orsich had the team’s third-best score with a 76-80-116.
Freshman Hannah Hoover (Curwensville) is one of four first-year players for the Lions, whose first outing will be a PSUAC Tournament at the Penn State White Course Thursday.
