BEA Losses 7-3 in State Championship Game

UNIVERSITY PARK — Undefeated Spring Grove rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to hand Bald Eagle Area a 7-3 loss in the PIAA Class AAA softball championship game at Beard Field in Nittany Lion Softball Park on the Penn State campus Friday afternoon.

The District 6 champion Lady Eagles, who had eked out a 1-0 win over Mountain League rival and District 9 titlist Clearfield in the semifinals Tuesday, grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Maralee Caldana singled to drive in the go-ahead run and then scored on a double by pitcher Madison Peters.

Spring Grove which had breezed to the finals by outscoring three state playoff opponents 40-0, erupted for five hits in the game-winning outburst that was capped by back-to-back RBI triples by Olivia Lehman and Megan Wolfe.

Wolfe, a freshman, picked up the win in relief of Lehman (24-0) with three hitless, scoreless innings.

The District 11 champs finished 28-0 with a .487 batting average and more than 100 extra base hits. Three Cardinals topped .600, Katelyn Rittenbaugh winding up at .750 with two singles and a double.

BEA, which was co-champion of the Mountain League with Philipsburg-Osceola, had a 22-4 record.
