HYDE — The way games unfolded the previous two afternoons left the Clearfield Area High School baseball shorthanded in the pitching department for Bellefonte’s annual appearance at the Bison Sports Complex Thursday, and the Red Raiders proceeded to pin a 23-10 Senior Day loss on the Bison.
A lengthy rain delay in the third inning, dodging showers at other times and the combination of 18 walks by eight hurlers and 29 hits made it a long Mountain League finale for both teams even before the 10-run rule was invoked after six innings.
With the Bison’s top three pitchers unavailable, coach Sid Lansberry called on a trio with a total of 8-2/3 innings on the mound and two others with no varsity experience.
The Red Raiders took full advantage by pounding three home runs and four doubles among their 16 hits and were aided by 12 free passes and three hit batsmen.
They batted around in three innings, piling up eight runs in the first and seven runs in both the fifth and sixth frames.
Colton Burd walloped a grand slam home run to right center field in the sixth to cap a three-hit, five-RBI day, CJ Funk belted a three-run homer to center in the fifth that was his third consecutive hit and Bobby Marsh socked a solo homer to right in the fifth for one of his three RBIs while finishing with four hits.
Nick Capparelle cracked a pair of two-run doubles and scored four runs.
Burd, Funk, Marsh and Seth Shuey crossed the plate three times apiece.
Hayden Williams had three of Clearfield’s 13 singles off Jonathan Meyer, Funk and Derek Fravel, who got the win by pitching the last two innings and allowing two hits and one run.
Allan Myers and Kyle Elensky each had two hits, while Williams and Caullin Reed had pairs of RBIs.
The Bison went station-to-station in the fifth inning when they averted a Mercy Rule loss at that point by pouring across seven runs on seven hits around two walks. Elensky, Nate Barr, Eli Glass and Myers had RBI singles and Reed and Williams earned RBIs by drawing bases-loaded walks.
Williams, called on for his first varsity start, took the loss. The junior gave up the eight runs, four earned, in the rocky first frame, allowing five hits while walking two Red Raiders and hitting two.
Harrison Peacock, whose 4-1/3 previous innings were the most of the Bison who went to the bump, gave up one run in 2-1/3 frames though allowing three hits, walking three and hitting one.
Senior Hunter Hipps, making his fourth appearance, got the final two outs in the fourth but watched Bellefonte (12-5, 9-5 ML) turn two hits and three walks into runs in the fifth.
Barr, a junior, and Elensky, a freshman, made their varsity mound debuts in the fifth and sixth innings. Barr gave up five hits, two walks and eight runs before Elensky recorded the final three outs while allowing one hit, one walk and one run.
Clearfield slipped to 9-9 and finished 6-8 in the league.
Glass and Hipps were the seniors recognized and presented plaques prior to the game.
The Bison finish the regular season with games at Curwensville Monday and DuBois next Friday, the latter a change from the original schedule that had them making the short trip Thursday.
