HYDE — With contributions up and down the lineup in the hits, runs and RBI columns, the Clearfield Area High School softball team took care of business against Hollidaysburg for a 10-1 non-league victory at the Bison Sports Complex Wednesday.
The key hits were Morgan Cheek’s two-run single that capped the Lady Bison’s 4-0 start in the first inning and Casey English’s two-run homer in the third frame.
Olivia Bender was the only Lady Bison with two safeties in the balanced offense.
“Top to bottom, I thought we looked good at the plate,” Clearfield coach Derek Danver said.
Eight Lady Bison crossed home plate, with Kyra Mollura and Alexis Benton, the courtesy runner for Bender, scoring twice.
Cheek’s bases-loaded liner to right center followed RBI singles by Mollura and Alexis Bumbarger to give winning pitcher Emma Hipps more than enough support.
The Lady Bison had loaded the bases with one out on a walk, Bender’s infield single and a hit batsman.
English’s blast over the center field fence made it 6-0, but the Lady Bison weren’t able to really open it up until the sixth inning.
“We jumped out to that lead in the first inning, and I think we kind of lost focus a little bit,” Danver said. “That, on top of games three days in a row.
“But we did what we needed to do and got the win.”
Hollidaysburg (2-11) broke up Hipps’ shutout in the sixth inning with Trinity Molliver looping a single behind first base, stealing second and scoring on Avery Matherne’s single into center field.
Hipps wound up with a six-hitter for her eighth win and 14th complete game in 16 starts. She whiffed 10 Lady Tigers and walked one.
“She came out and gave us another good performance,” Danver said.
Hits by Kylee Hertlein, Rumsky and Bender led to the Lady Bison’s four-run sixth, with the final three runs scoring when Bumbarger’s hard drive to the outfield was misplayed.
Clearfield (9-8) will be at home for its Mountain League finale against Bellefonte Friday at 4:30 p.m.
