Campus Corner: Orsich Hurls Shutout for Fifth Victory

DUBOIS — Junior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) pitched his second complete game in seven starts for Penn State DuBois in a 7-0 shutout against Penn State Fayette at Showers Field Saturday.

After giving up three hits in the first inning, he got out of the jam via double play and proceeded to retire the next 16 in a row.

The visitors got to him for two more singles in the seventh inning, but he picked a runner of first base and then completed his fifth victory that tops the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference.

Orsich, who is unbeaten, recorded six strikeouts in his 85-strike performance that included 61 strikes.

Sophomore outfielder Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) capped the Lions’ five-run first inning with a two-run single, added another hit and stole two bases.

He drove in the first two runs with a fifth-inning single and ninth-inning sacrifice fly Sunday when the Lions completed a three-game PSUAC sweep of Penn State Fayette with a 5-2 win at Lemont Furnace.

Freshman Jake Sorbera (Clearfield) pitched 1-2/3 innings in that game, giving up two hits and one unearned run.

The right-hander has a 1.08 earned run average for 16-2/3 innings in eight relief appearances. His statistics include seven strikeouts, five walks, one hit batsman and 11 hits allowed.

Orsich, who worked one scoreless inning against Penn College at Williamsport last Wednesday, owns a 1.86 ERA that is third in the PSUAC and sixth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. His five wins are tied for third in the USCAA.

He has surrendered only six runs in 29 innings with 14 strikeouts, four walks and four hit batsmen.

Morgan is 27-for-55 in 22 games for a .491 batting average that is second in the PSUAC and seventh in the USCAA. He has scored 19 runs, driven in nine and stolen 17 bases, good for second place in the PSUAC and tied for third in the USCAA.

Sophomore infielder/outfielder Zane Morgan (Clearfield) had a two-run single in a 12-2 win in Saturday’s nightcap to increase his RBI total to 12.

He is hitting .373 (19-for-51) with five doubles, one home run and 15 runs scored.

Freshman first baseman Seth Bumbarger (Clearfield) has three hits and one RBI in 11 games.

Penn State DuBois is 9-0 for a two-game lead in the PSUAC West Division.

The Lions are 19-6 overall with a 14-game winning streak.

CRESSON — Senior pitcher Jon Janocko (Clearfield) made his first start for Juniata after six relief stints but had to depart early after walking one batter and hitting another in a 12-10 loss to host Mount Aloysius last Tuesday.

He has given up 10 hits while striking out three, walking seven and hitting three batters in six innings of work.

The Eagles are 1-7 in the Landmark Conference and 8-16 overall.

SLIPPERY ROCK —- Slippery Rock sophomore Ethan McGinnis (Clearfield) qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in the triple jump by covering 12.87 meters (42 feet, 2¼ inches) at the Dave Labor Invitational in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Saturday.

He placed seventh among the 25 triple jumpers from eight teams.

McGinnis also registered a season-best high jump of 1.82 meters (5-11½) to tie for 10th place.

FROSTBURG, Md. — Pitt-Johnston sophomore Mason Royer (Clearfield) made his best showing of the spring in the 110-meter hurdles for Pitt-Johnstown as his time of 16.94 seconds was good for fifth place in the Frostburg State Bobcat Invitational Saturday.

He matches his season-best in the 100-meter dash with the 12.16 effort that landed him in 14th place.
