DUBOIS — Sophomore outfielder Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) enjoyed a banner week at the plate and junior pitcher Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) added another win to his perfect record as Penn State DuBois extended its winning streak to nine games.
Morgan collected seven hits, including three in a 9-0 shutout of Houghton (N.Y.) and two in Sunday’s 4-3 squeaker over Penn State Greater Allegheny that capped a three-game Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference sweep.
Singles in the Lions’ 6-2 and 6-3 wins at Showers Field Friday helped raise his average to .500, which is tied for the best in the PSUAC and tied for sixth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
Morgan also stole three bases for a season total of 14 that has tied for first in the PSUAC and for third in the USCAA.
In 17 games, Morgan is 23-for-46 with five runs driven in and has scored 17 runs, which have him tied for fifth in the PSUAC.
Orsich registered his fourth win in his fifth start, going six innings in Friday’s opener against PS Greater Allegheny and allowing seven hits but only one run. He struck out one, walked one and hit one.
His earned run average dipped to 2.57 for 21 innings. He has given up 22 hits and six runs, all earned, with seven strikeouts, four walks and four hit batsmen.
He sits atop the PSUAC in wins and is tied for fourth in the USCAA.
Sophomore infielder/outfielder Zane Morgan (Clearfield) had four hits and two RBIs in his pairs of starts at third base and right field.
He’s hitting .447 (17-for-38) with four doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs for 14 games. He’s also scored 11 runs.
Freshman first baseman Seth Bumbarger (Clearfield) singled in his lone appearance to boost his average to .231 for nine games.
Freshman pitcher Jake Sorbera (Clearfield) made two relief appearances, working 1.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout and one hit allowed.
His ERA is down to 1.38 for 13 innings in six outings. He has surrendered only six hits and two runs, both earned, with seven strikeouts, five walks and four hit batsmen.
Penn State DuBois (14-6) leads the PSUAC West Division at 6-0.

MADISON, N.J. — Senior Jon Janocko (Clearfield) bailed out Juniata with a bases-loaded strikeout in the third inning but couldn’t hold off Wilson batters in the fourth and wound up the losing pitcher in a 10-2 final last Wednesday.
He was relieved after the hosts had taken a 4-2 lead, finishing with four hits and five earned runs allowed with two strikeouts and one hit batsman for one inning.
Janocko has made five relief appearances with one save.
The Eagles (7-11) are 1-5 in the Centennial Conference after winning one of three weekend games against Drew.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
SELINSGROVE — St. Francis (Pa.) senior Sarah Lash (Clearfield) placed eighth among the 35 javelin competitors representing 15 teams at the Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna Saturday.
Her best throw was 35.66 meters (117 feet).
Two Red Flash juniors were first and second, Sara Phelan (48.89 meters) and Michelle Hildebrand (44.49).

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
SELINSGROVE — Pitt-Johnstown sophomore Mason Royer (Clearfield) lowered his personal-best times in two events at the Jim Taylor Invitational on the Susquehanna campus Saturday.
He placed 16th in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.29 seconds and 44th in the 100-meter dash in 12.16.
At the California (Pa.) U Early Bird Meet the previous week, Royer’s times were 17.34 for 11th place in the hurdles and 12.19 for 27th place in the 100 dash.
