Campus Corner: Four Former Bison Shine for PS DuBois

BASEBALL

DUBOIS — A quartet of former Clearfield Area High School teammates were instrumental in Penn State DuBois sweeping three games from Penn State New Kensington in their first Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference action.

Junior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) and freshman Jake Sorbera (Clearfield) were the winning pitchers in the Lions’ 15-0 and 15-2 road victories Saturday, while sophomore twins Zane and Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) each had six hits in the series that ended with a 14-4 win at Showers Field Sunday.

Orsich went three innings in his fourth start, enough to earn his second ‘W’ in the five-inning shutout. He surrendered five hits and had three strikeouts. The right-hander also pitched one inning as the starter in the Lions’ 30-0 rout of Butler County Community College earlier in the week.

Sorbera made his fourth relief appearance in the nightcap and picked up his second win, too, with a three-inning stint in which he whiffed three, walked one and gave up two hits and one run.

The Morgans had near identical performances, both going 6-for-10 at the plate and scoring seven runs.

Zane recorded a double and two RBIs in each game and also homered in the middle one.

Thayne had three RBIs and stole five bases for a season total of 11 that ranks fifth in the United State Colllegiate Athletic Association.

Freshman Seth Bumbarger (Clearfield) made his fourth start at first base in one game and pinch-hit in another.

The Morgans are two of the top hitters for the 10-6 Lions, Zane at .500 on 13 hits with eight RBIs and 11 runs scored in 10 games with nine starts at the corner infield and outfield positions and Thayne at .457 on 16 hits with a team-high 14 runs scored in 13 games, including 11 starts in the three outfield positions.

Bumbarger has a .167 average for eight appearances.

Orsich’s two outings lowered his earned run average to 3.00 for 15 innings. He has six strikeouts with 15 hits, five runs and three walks allowed.

Sorbera’s ERA is 1.57 for a 11-1/3 innings. He has given up only five hits and two runs, both earned, with six strikeouts, five walks and four hit batsmen.
