WOMEN’S SWIMMING
YORK — Sisters Paige and Claire Mikesell (Clearfield) were two of the top point-getters for Indiana University of Pennsylvania with their performances in four individual events at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in the Graham Aquatic Center last week.
Paige Mikesell earned 104 points, second to Nicole Smith’s 107.5, while Claire Mikesell added 87 for the Crimson Hawks, who finished second to West Chester for the first time since 2014 by accumulating 1,175 points.
Paige Mikesell touched second in both butterfly races with times of 55.96 seconds in the 100, after breaking a five-year-old IUP freshman record with a 55.90 in the prelims, and an NCAA B cut time of 2:03.13 in the 200.
She also hit the NCAA B cut time in the 200 individual medley, placing fourth in 2:06.39.
She finished eighth in the 100 freestyle in 52.95 seconds.
Her 200 fly and 200 IM times were season-bests, as was her 52.79 in the 100 free prelims.
Claire Mikesell claimed runner-up medals with NCAA B cut times in both breaststroke events, breaking the five-year-old school record in the 100 with a personal record 1:03.80 and following up with a 2:17.81 finish in the 200.
She won the 50 free B final in 24.39 for ninth place and was 16th in the 100 free in 54.54.
Both helped Crimson Hawk relay teams produce points.
Paige Mikesell swam the fastest first leg, 1:53.15, that her three teammates turned into a school record 7:34.18 for second place in the 800 free, turned in a 54.93 fly split for the 400 medley foursome that lowered the IUP standard to 3:46.66 for second-place points and led off again with a 52.91 split for the 400 free quartet that finished third in 3:30.10.
Claire Mikesell posted a 24.38 leadoff split for the 200 free team that placed sixth in 1:37.24.
Paige Mikesell has won nine individual events and helped six relay teams to victories in her rookie season.
Claire Mikesell owns wins in three individual races and has been on five winning relay teams.

MEN’S SWIMMING
ERIE — Penn State freshman Chase Bietz (Clearfield) was accorded Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference First Team honors for seven events last week.
He had been selected Newcomer of the Year after the 2019 AMCC Championships the previous week, when he was a triplewinner in individual races and a quadruple winner in the relays.
Bietz set pool and/or AMCC Meet records with his wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke races as well as the 200 individual medley.
And he was on four Lion relay teams that broke 10 school, pool, AMCC Meet and AMCC Open marks.
Bietz teamed up with Mark Patterson, Quinn Fischer, and Alexander Croll for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay at the Kenyon (Ohio) Fast Chance Meet Saturday.
He also placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 58.08 and 10th in the 50 free in a season-best 21.66.
The meet drew swimmers from 12 teams who were trying to better their times and reach qualifying standards for next months NCAA Division III Championships.

YORK — Clarion sophomore Tate Swanson (Clearfield) set a personal record for the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:04.64 time for 25th place in the preliminaries of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in the Graham Aquatic Center last week.
Swanson also was 25th in the 50 free (22.52 seconds) and 26th in both the 100 free (50.02) and 200 free (1:51.54).
Golden Eagle sophomore Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) paced 25th in the 100 free (49.89) and 32nd in the 200 individual medley (2:05.96).
Clarion finished sixth in the seven-team meet with 241.5 points.

WRESTLING
WILLIAMSPORT — Lycoming junior 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield) was one of three Lycoming matmen to win titles in the NCAA Division III Southeast Region Tournament hosted by the Warriors in Lamade Gym Friday and Saturday.
He earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time with four victories that improved his record to 22-2.
Ogden registered a 21-3 technical fall in 5:49 against Joe Embleton of Messiah, decisioned Ronald Wuest of McDaniel 7-1 and won by injury default over Jesse Hoover of York at 1:14 to reach the finals, where he won by a medical forfeit from Ken Burrs of Waynesboro.
Lycoming piled up 114.5 points to tie Ferrum for second place, its best finish since the NCAA Division III region format was resumed in 2013.
Messiah won the team crown with 121 points.

LOCK HAVEN — Competing unattached, Lock Haven freshman Luke McGonigal (Clearfield) won three of four matches to place third at 197 pounds in the Mat-Town Open II Tournament Sunday.
McGonigal, who had been out of action since early January because of an injury, defeated Abraham Correa-Medina of American 9-2 but was dropped into the consolation bracket by eventual runner-up Chris Weller of Lehigh.
McGonigal (14-6) finished strong with wins over Old Dominion’s Noah Bushman 10-5 and then Correa-Medina again, 6-2, in the consolation final.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
EDINBORO — Slippery Rock sophomore Ethan McGinnis (Clearfield) set a personal record in the triple jump to place ninth at the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Edinboro’s Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Center Saturday.
His hop, step and jump covered 13.26 meters (43 feet, 6 inches).
The Rock tied for third place in the 11-team meet with 80 points.

BASEBALL
LAKELAND, Fla. — Junior Thomas Summers (Clearfield) made a pinch-hit appearance for Southeastern (Fla.) against the Detroit Tigers in a major league exhibition game that drew 4,965 fans into Joker Marchant Stadium Friday.
Summers was retired by Andrew Voelker, who has pitched in the minor leagues the last five years.
The Fire were locked in a 2-2 in the middle of the seventh inning before the major leaguers and farmhands went in front and then broke it open in the eighth for a 13-2 win.
