DuBois Central Beats Down Golden Tide 78-52

CURWENSVILLE – The DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) boys basketball team entered Curwensville’s Patton Hall Tuesday night with two goals. The first was to get a victory. The second was to have senior Justin Miknis become the school’s all time leading scorer in boys basketball.

Mission accomplished on both parts for the Cardinals.

DCC won the game in fairly easy fashion, 78-52 and Miknis set the record.

The win gives the Cardinals an overall season record of 11-9 and the record by Miknis was set on a free throw with 4:55 to play in the second quarter.

That free throw gave Miknis a total of 1,413 career points, surpassing the mark set by Chris Marshall with 1,412 in 2011.

However the first quarter was owned by DCC’s Brandon Walker who dumped in 16 points, aided by four three pointers.

And, thanks to Walker, DuBois Central Catholic took a 28-12 lead into the second stanza.

The Golden Tide defense did not tighten up in the second either, being outscored 22-10 to trail at the break 50-22.

Curwensville head coach Matt Wassil commented afterwards, saying, “Tonight our defensive effort wasn’t good enough. I was somewhat pleased with our offense at times, but again our defense was the problem.”

The Tide did win the third eight minutes 20-15, thanks to a monster quarter by senior Christian Bakaysa who scored 13 of those 20 Curwensville points. But the first half damage was too much for the Tide to overcome.

Wassil then added, “I liked the fact that we didn’t quit out there tonight and didn’t tank in the second half. So the fact that we kept playing hard was nice to see as we just keep trying to get better.”

Walker ended the night with 24 points for DCC while Miknis added 20 along with 10 from Jonathan Kurtz.

Bakaysa paced the Tide’s offense with 22 tallies with freshman Ty Terry also having double figures with 15 on five three-pointers.

DuBois Central won the first meeting between the two squads on January 8, in DuBois, 67-36.

In junior varsity action the Cardinals downed the Tide by a score of 44-22. High scorer for Curwensville was Scott Condon with 9 points.

Curwensville (2-15) will once again play at home, on Friday night, against visiting Sheffield. The JV game will start at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.

This reminder that the Golden Tide have a make-up game scheduled at Glendale to battle the Vikings on Saturday. The varsity contest will start at 1 pm, as there is no JV game.
