Golden Tide’s Passarelli Earns Silver at Fred Bell Tourney

GROVE CITY — Blake Passarelli, who losto PA Power Rankings’ No. 1-ranked Brock McMillen of Glendale in the final Saturday, was the lone Curwensville Area High School wrestler to place at the 36th Fred Bell Tournament.

The Golden Tide senior advanced to the championship bout by pnning Charles Wimberly of Northwestern at 1:27 and decisioning Carter Stanley of Cranberry 5-2, Ryan Madigan of Warren 6-4 and No. 2 seed Jeff Pattison of McGuffey 4-3.

Down to start the second period against McMillen, Passarelli gained a 3-0 advantage with an escape and takedown before surrending what was a pivotal penalty point for interlocking with just one second remaining.

McMillen, a returning PIAA Class AA silver medalist, answered with an escape and takedown of his own in the third period, but Passarelli quickly broke free to tie the bout.

In overtime, McMillan secured the takedown for a 6-4 sudden victory.

“That interlocking point kept him from winning 4-3,” Curwensville coach Dean Swatsworth said. “It was a good match. It was good for Blake to see where he is and what he needs to do.

“Both wrestled great, so you have to give (McMillen) credit.”

Passarelli went into the tourney ranked No. 7, right behind behind Pattison, and finally reached the finals after placing fourth, third and third the last three years.

Curwensville placed 30th in the 38-team tourney with 34 points as 113-pounder Spencer Hoover was the only other Golden Tide wrestler to post multi wins, splitting his four matches.

Adam Straw (138), Duane Brady (152) and Cole Bressler (160) each had one win.

“It was a good tournament with some very good teams,” Swatsworth said.

Once-beaten Glendale, with Suds Dubler (113) and Cory Johnson (220) joining McMillen as gold medalists, won the title with 130.5 points.

Rounding out the top five were Kane with 121 points, Union City with 120.5, Penns Valley with 110 and General McLane with 105.
