ST. MARYS – In a week where the Curwensville girls basketball team plays four games in five days none could be much tougher than Tuesday night’s game against Elk County Catholic (ECC) at St. Marys.
Coming off of Monday night’s big win against Union, 52-47, the Lady Tide seemed a little sluggish after the first quarter and ended up losing 61-42.
Curwensville head coach Bob Desmett talked about the game, saying, “I don’t really know what happened out there tonight, maybe we were tired or what. We just got beat, flat out.”
The Lady Tide did match the Lady Crusaders point for point in the first quarter, going into the second eight minutes tied at 13-13.
It was in the second quarter where the Tide got behind and seemed to lose some energy as ECC took a 29-20 halftime edge thanks to winning the second frame 16-7.
Coming out in the second half the Lady Tide needed to find the energy, especially on offense, but not on this night, as they scored just four third quarter points while giving up 12 and falling even further behind after three at 41-24.
Lady Tide senior Madison Weber did all she could in the fourth quarter to make the outcome a little more respectable as she scored 13 of her game high of 27 points.
Tarah Jacobson, hitting for double figures two nights in a row, added 11 for Curwensville.
Lady Crusader Taylor Newton lead ECC on offense, almost matching Weber, as the junior pumped in 26 points, while teammate Maddie Kear added 10.
Addressing the play of his team, Desmett commented, “We didn’t execute tonight like we did last night against Union. It was one of those nights where we have got to play better because tonight we didn’t play well. We just have to keep after it.”
The Lady Crusader junior varsity squad also won the evening’s first game, 39-33, over the Lady Tide.
Curwensville (3-7) is right back at it on Wednesday night with a trip to Flinton to play the Lady Vikings of Glendale in a Moshannon Valley League game. JVs tip off at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
