HYDE – In a battle for perhaps supremacy in the Mountain League, the Huntingdon boys basketball team defeated Clearfield Friday night on the Bison home court 63-53.
The Bearcats are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Clearfield held its own in the first quarter against the well drilled, quick Bearcats, trailing by just one point heading into the second quarter 22-21.
Unfortunately for the Bison that would be its best quarter offensively as Huntingdon took the second stanza 12-8 and then the third quarter 15-8.
After three periods the Bearcats held a 12 point margin 49-37.
Clearfield did outscore the Bearcats in the final eight minutes 16-14, and actually pulled to within eight points late in the fourth after falling behind 55-39.
Bison head coach Nate Glunt said afterwards, “I have been telling people that Huntingdon is an excellent team, and we saw that tonight. Two games this year they have scored at least 60 first half points. They are such an active team that is well coached by Nick (Payne).”
Clearfield had three players in double figures with Karson Rumsky leading the way with 13 while Keagan Hess and Cade Walker each added 11.
The Bearcats were paced on offense by Nick Rigby with 18 tallies and Jackson Ritchey with 13.
Glunt then stated, “We just need to be more physical at times, although I thought at times tonight we were doing a good job of battling them. But it’s early in the season and we have a long way to go and we will get better.”
Huntingdon won the junior varsity game by a score of 46-42 over the Bison. High scorer for Clearfield was Luke Winters with 15 points.
Clearfield, now 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in the league, takes its first road trip on Monday with another Mountain League game, this time against Philipsburg-Osceola. The junior varsity game will begin at 6 pm with the varsity contest to immediately follow.
