Campus Corner: Steiner, Swanson Lower Personal Records

MEN’S SWIMMING

AKRON, Ohio — Sophomores Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) and Tate Swanson (Clearfield) of Clarion both set multiple personal records during the annual Zippy Invitational hosted by Akron University last weekend.

Steiner lowered his marks in five individual events, the highlight a 2:05.22 to win the C Final in the 200-yard butterfly.

His other PRs occurred during the prelims, 2:05.33 for 29th place in the 200 individual medley, 1:50.76 for 30th in the 200 free, 49.09 for 32nd in the 100 free and 22.46 for 36th in the 50 free.

Steiner also participated in four relays, posting a 21.66 third leg for the Golden Eagle ‘A’ 200 free foursome that finished fourth in 1:24.35.

He swam the fly splits for the ‘B’ medley quartets, turning in a 44.77 for the 400 team that wound up 10th in 3:42.98 and a 24.28 for the 200 foursome that was 13th in 1:40.66.

And he anchored the ‘B’ free team with a 49.95 split to touch the wall 12th in 3:19.09.

After setting PRs in the prelims, Swanson placed seventh in two C Finals with times of 1:49.57 in the 200 free and 59:45 in the 100 back. His qualifying times were 1:49.25 in the free and 59.40 in the back.

He also logged a PR 48.90 to place 30th in the 100 free prelims and a season-best 22.44 to place 35th in the 50 free prelims.

Swanson helped a pair of Clarion ‘A’ relay teams to high finishes, turning in a 48.81 third split for the 400 free foursome that was fourth in 3:17.53 and a 1:50.02 third leg for the 800 free quartet that was seventh in 7:07.95.

He closed out the ‘B’ free team’s 13th-place finish in 1:28.70 with a 21.97 anchor leg.

Clarion wound up fifth with 875.5 points.

WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior Michael Spencer (Clearfield) saw his first action of the season for Westminster at the Wooster Invitational last weekend.

He qualified for the 50-yard freestyle ‘B’ Final with a 22.02 time in the prelims and placed 16th overall in 22.38.

His prelim times were 58.80 in the 100 backstroke for 26th place and 50.16 in the 100 free for 33rd place.

Spencer anchored two relay teams, recording a 21.94 split for the Titan ‘A’ 200 free foursome that finished seventh in 1:26.61 and a 21.60 leg for the ‘B’ 200 medley quartet that placed 10th in 1:38.70.

Westminster claimed third place in the 10-team meet with 1,105 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

GREENSBURG — Junior Cody Spaid (Clearfield) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and added six points as Pitt-Greensburg evened its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference record at 1-1 by defeating Hilbert 70-65 in Chambers Hall Saturday.

Spaid also blocked two shots and had one assist for the 3-4 Bobcats.

Against Franciscan in an 85-80 overtime loss at Steubenville, Ohio, earlier in the week, he had three points, six rebounds and three assists.

Spaid leads the team in rebounds (50) and blocks (11) and is tied for the most assists (16).

He has scored 49 points and registered four steals.

DUBOIS — Junior Bernard Rauckhorst (Curwensville) scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds in Penn State DuBois’ first three Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference outings last week.

The Lions lost 77-55 to PSUAC West Division rival Penn State Beaver on their home floor and 83-64 to Penn State Schuylkill and 63-42 to Penn State Hazleton on their weekend road trip to fall to 3-4 overall.

Rauckhorst, who made his first start against Penn State Beaver, has totaled 28 points and 22 rebounds to go with three assists, two steals and one blocked shot.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

LEWISBURG — Sophomore Mason Royer (Clearfield) debuted for Pitt-Johnstown by competing in three events at the Bucknell Bison Opener in Gerard Fieldhouse Saturday.

He placed 14th in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.30 seconds, 20th in the 200-meter dash in 24.61 and 21st in the 60-meter dash in 7.51.
