2018 Lantern Walk Explores East Side

DUBOIS – The 12th annual DuBois Area Historical Society Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk will explore a new area when it visits the East Side of the City of DuBois on Saturday, Oct. 6.

“The East Side was the location of DuBois’ Swedish community and was home to the VanTassel-DuBois Tannery, and is the current location of the DuBois Country Club, Tannery Dam, J. E. DuBois Hose Company and the Bucktail Council Boy Scout headquarters,” said Tom Schott, chair of the Lantern Walk.

“There is a rich history in this section of DuBois and we may even have the answer as to why this area is called the East Side when it is north of downtown DuBois. The program will also recall two prominent residents, who have mostly been forgotten over the ensuing years.”

The walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6 with the first tour leaving from the John E. DuBois Hose Company building at 5 p.m. Additional walks will leave every 15 minutes.

To make advance reservations for a specific walk time, telephone 814-371-4627 between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Tour groups will be limited to 20 people. Walk-ins are also welcome and will be assigned to the next available tour. The walk is a little less than a mile and will last a little over an hour.

Admission to the Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk is $5 for adults and $3 for students, with children sixth grade and younger free if accompanied by an adult.

All proceeds benefit the DuBois Area Historical Society. The program is suitable for all ages. Parking is available at the J. E. DuBois Fire Hall.

Performing this year are:  Barb Emmer, Beecher Klingensmith, Merica Pallone, Robin Powers, Tom Shade, Paul Sprague, Caleb Thompson, Hannah Thompson and Levi Thompson.

Last year 285 people attended the Lantern Walk, the fifth consecutive year attendance had topped 250. The first 10 Lantern Walks have a total attendance of 2,257.
