Lady Bison Standouts Cline, Bishop Receive All-State Honors

CLEARFIELD — Outstanding senior seasons at the plate earned the Clearfield Area High School duo of Brooke Cline and Aspen Bishop first-team laurels on the ninth annual Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association Class AAAA All-State Team.

Cline was one of four shortstops and Bishop one of six outfielders to be honored.

They were 1-2 in almost all of the offensive categories for the Lady Bison, who finished 9-12 for rookie head coach Derek Danver after losing 5-4 in nine innings at St. Marys in the District 9 semifinals.

Cline, who struck only once in 83 at-bats, recorded a lofty .528 batting average on 38 hits that made her the Lady Bison’s all-time leader with 112 for her four-year career.

Included were team highs of 10 doubles and three triples plus two home runs. Her 25 career doubles might be another school record.

Cline also was tops in runs scored with 33 and second in runs driven in with 22.

She stole eight bases in 10 attempts.

Bishop, who was named to the PAHSSBCA Class AAA second team in 2017, was right behind Cline with 37 hits for a .481 average and led the Lady Bison with six home runs and 31 RBIs.

She was tied for second in runs with 21 and doubles with five.

Both Mountain League All-Stars plan to continue their careers in college, Cline at Clarion University and Bishop at the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport.

Punxsutawney senior pitcher Kylee Lingenfelter, a Penn State commit, and Bellefonte sophomore Taylor Kerr also were selected to the Class AAAA first team, Lingenfelter for the second time.

Senior third baseman Rianna Trexler and sophomore outfielder Mallorie Smith of Bellefonte were named to the second team. Trexler was an honorable mention shortstop in 2016.

In Class AAAAA, two DuBois players were honored, senior second baseman Kylee Bundy on the first team and senior outfielder Lexi Ray on the second team.

The Class AAA first team featured three standouts for the PIAA champion Philipsburg-Osceola Lady Mounties in senior catcher Kylie Thal, junior outfielder Maddie Lucas and junior designated player Kam Harris.

Thal and Lucas are first team repeaters after receiving honorable mention as a sophomores, while Harris was a first team pitcher in 2016 and a second team pitcher last year.

Lady Mountie senior shortstop Hannah Thompson landed on the second team along with junior outfielder Ashley Negley and junior designated player Dylan Claycomb of Central.

Class AA first team recognition was awarded to a pair of West Branch seniors, pitcher Lizzy Scott and outfielder Skylar Ceprish.

The Class A first team included junior pitchers Lexi Mulhollen of Glendale and Ashley Wruble of DuBois Central Catholic, freshman catcher Mia Meholick of DuBois Central Catholic, second baseman Jenna Weisner of Elk County Catholic, senior shortstop Alexis Constantino of Clarion and junior outfielder Carley Semancik of DuBois Central Catholic.

Mulhollen was on the second team last year and rated honorable mention in 2016.

Class A second team honors were bestowed on senior outfielder Sidney Lewis of Moshannon Valley, freshman second baseman Olivia Reese of Glendale, sophomore Shayleigh Gulvas and freshman designated player Chelsea of DuBois Central Catholic, senior shortstop Josie Smith of Elk County Catholic and sophomore third baseman Kaitlyn Constantino of Clarion.

Selections were made by 13 active members of the PAHSSBCA following nominations from more than 250 coaches and 140 media members.
