CURWENSVILLE — Eli Glass drove in five runs with two doubles and a single, Thayne Morgan had three hits and four RBIs and a trio of Clearfield pitchers held Curwensville to a pair of hits in a five-inning, 15-2 Jefferson County American Legion League win at the high school baseball field Thursday evening.
Glass chased home teammates in all three of the Chiefs’ rallies, with the highlight a double down the right field line that drove in the last three of the five runs that expanded their lead to 9-0 in the third inning.
Morgan’s big blow was a double to deep left center in the second inning for Clearfield’s first two runs after two walks around a Curwensville misplay had filled the sacks. Zane Morgan followed with a sacrifice fly and Glass added an RBI double for the 4-0 start against Noah VonGunden.
The Morgan twins picked up RBIs in the third via bases-loaded walks.
Five free passes and a hit batsmen enabled the Chiefs to push across six runs in the fourth inning. Their only hits were a double by Seth Bumbarger and singles by Thayne Morgan and Glass that were good for RBIs.
Starter Jake Sorbera gave up both of Curwensville’s hits in the first inning. With one out, Caullin Reed doubled on a sinking liner to center field and Avery Francisco legged out a slow roller to shortstop.
Sorbera then retired five of the next six Bucks, striking out two and walking one.
Winning hurler Cade Walker struck out the side in the third frame but ran into control difficulties with a runner aboard on an error in the next inning, forcing in a run by issuing two walks and hitting a batter.
Bryce Timko relieved with one out and induced an RBI forceout by Broc Heitsenrether for the Bucks’ second run and gave up a walk that loaded the bases before getting an inning-ending flyout.
The southpaw worked a perfect fifth inning, striking out the last two batters.
The Chiefs are 3-3 in the JCL and 10-6 overall.
An update to their revised schedule shows a home game against Curwensville Friday, a doubleheader at DuBois Sunday and a home game against Punxsutawney/Brookville Monday.
