FREDERICK, Md. — With Reese Wilson and Thayne Morgan leading the way, the Clearfield American Legion baseball team rolled to an 11-1 win over Cecil County (Md.) at McCurdy Field Saturday afternoon to wrap up the Bracket 1 title and secure a berth in Monday’s semifinals of the Frederick Wood Bat Tournament.
The Chiefs are 3-0 while Frederick Post 11 and Laurel (Md.) Post 60 both have two losses going into the final games of pool play Sunday.
Clearfield was paired against Frederick at 8 a.m.
Wilson got it done with his arm and his bat in the five-inning Mercy Rule game, pitching a four-hitter with three strikeouts and three walks and delivering three hits, driving in two runs and scoring three in the No. 9 hole.
Leadoff batter Morgan accounted for the Chiefs’ other four hits, one a triple, and also scored three times. He had one RBI.
Morgan’s three-bagger and Nate Barr’s groundout got Clearfield on the board in the first inning.
Chase Hollister tripled and scored on a passed ball for Cecil County in the top of the second, but the Chiefs quickly responded with a three-spot.
Allan Myers was hit by a pitch and eventually tallied the game-winning run on an error before Wilson doubled home two insurance runs.
The Chiefs expanded their lead to 8-1 in the fourth frame, aided by four walks. Jake Sorbera touched home plate on a wild pitch, Barr picked up another RBI on a groundout, Myers worked a free pass for an RBI and Hayden Williams earned an RBI via a forceout.
Three runs in the fifth made it a walk-off win for the Chiefs, now 8-5 with a four-game winning streak.
After Sorbera walked and Wilson and Morgan singled to load the bases, Barr recorded his third RBI groundout.
Then, with Zane Morgan at bat, Wilson zipped home on a wild pitch and Morgan scored the game-ending marker on an off-target throw to third base.
Clearfield’s opponent for Monday’s 11:30 a.m. semifinal will come out of Bracket 4, which has teams from New Jersey, New York and Maryland.
