PHILLIPPI, W.Va. — Bryce Timko and Eli Glass combined on a two-hit shutout, Glass and Reese Wilson drove in four runs apiece and the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team thumped Garrett County (Md.) 16-0 on the Philip Barbour High School diamond Thursday night to salvage a split for the second day in a row in the 28th Annual Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic.

Earlier in the day, the Chiefs had fallen to Columbia (Md.) 14-4 in six innings at the Robin Harvey Memorial Field in nearby Elkins.

They came back to lay down a 19-hit barrage on three of the four Garrett County pitchers in the nightcap, with nine going for extra bases.

Glass slugged two extra base hits among his three, including a three-run home run in Clearfield’s seven-run seventh inning.

Seth Bumbarger had a pair of doubles in a three-hit performance, and Wilson, Timko, Zane Morgan, Allan Myers and Harrison Peacock added two-baggers.

Jake Sorbera joined Glass and Bumbarger in the three-hit column, while Wilson, Myers and Nate Barr chipped in two apiece.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run single by Barr and back-to-back RBI doubles by Glass and Myers.

Wilson’s two-run single made it 7-0 in the third.

The lead was extended to 9-0 in the fourth when Bumbarger and Sorbera drew bases-loaded walks.

Timko led off the seventh with his double and Barr was aboard on an error when Glass clubbed his home run. One out later, Hayden Williams singled, Bumbarger doubled, Sorbera and Harrison Peacock delivered run-scoring singles and Wilson capped the rally with a two-run double.

Timko recorded the win with a strong six-inning stint, striking out eight and walking only one. He gave up both of Garrett County’s hits.

Glass protected the shutout in the seventh, though walking three. He had one strikeout.

Against Columbia Post 300, the Chiefs gained the upper hand, 4-1, with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Thayne Morgan doubled and Peacock walked, and after Morgan was cut down at the plate on Williams’ grounder to third, Wilson singled to put Clearfield ahead. Zane Morgan reached base on a misplay before Barr singled for his second RBI and Glass followed with a sacrifice fly.

Glass was working on a two-hitter going to the bottom of the fourth, but the first six Patriots reached base, three on walks and one when hit by a pitch.

Sorbera, who pitched three innings Thursday, relieved with the scored tied and the bases loaded and was unable to quell the uprising until Columbia pushed across four more runs, two on a double by winning pitcher Steven Rice, for an 8-4 lead.

The Patriots made it a Mercy Rule victory in their next at-bat, scoring six runs off Sorbera and Williams on three hits, three walks, two hit batsmen and a Chiefs’ miscue. The game ended on back-to-back bases-loaded walks.

Rice struck out six and walked three while allowing eight hits and two earned runs.

Clearfield got a triple and two singles from Thayne Morgan and a double and two singles from Barr.

The Chiefs (3-2) will wrap up their first appearance in the 30-team tournament Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against Moorefield (W.Va.) Legion Post 64.
