HOLLIDAYSBURG — Whether Brooke Cline is the all-time leader in hits for the Clearfield Area High School softball program is not known for certain, but No. 107, which came in the first inning of a 12-6 win over Hollidaysburg at Legion Field Wednesday evening, officially makes her No. 1 going back at least 25 years.
Records for prior seasons have yet to be researched.
The senior shortstop passed the current era standard of 106 set by 2014 graduate Rachel Hoffman, who erased the previous high of 103 established by 2007 grad Brittany Pataky.
A run-scoring double in the second inning and a two-run single in the seventh boosted Cline’s four-year career hit total to 109 in 81 games, with two regular season games remaining before the District 9 Class AAAA Playoffs.
Her 35 hits this spring give the Clarion University commit a .556 batting average.
The Lady Bison piled up 20 hits and scored in every inning except the fifth to emerge with their eighth victory in 18 games and back-to-back wins for the first time in their first season under coach Derek Danver.
Aspen Bishop, Makayla Ross and Karly Rumsky matched Cline’s three hits, while Mackenzie Lansberry, Erica Hanes and Kate Lansberry had two hits apiece.
Bishop, Rumsky and Hanes doubled and had two RBIs apiece. Kate Lansberry also doubled.
Hanes was the winning pitcher, working 3-2/3 innings in relief of Abby Fedder, pulled by Danver after the senior right-hander gave up her only hit with one out in the fourth inning because he wants her available to step into the circle against Philipsburg-Osceola at the Bison Sports Complex Thursday.
Hanes gave up seven hits and five runs, only two earned, in her third victory without a loss.
Hits by Cline, Bishop and Ross put Clearfield ahead 2-0 in the first, and the margin ballooned to 6-0 in the second on a two-run single by Hanes and RBI hits by Cline and Bishop.
Rumsky and Mackenzie Lansberry drove in runs with a double and groundout, respectively, in the third, and Fedder’s run-scoring single in the fourth had the Lady Bison one run away from a Mercy Rule win, but they couldn’t manage an early finish.
Their final runs were the result of hits by Rumsky in the sixth and Cline in the seventh.
Hollidaysburg (3-12) was led by Avery Matherne with three singles and two RBIs.
