Bison Pour Across 13 Runs in First Inning, Roll to 16-1 Win

HYDE — There’s not much Clearfield Area High School baseball coach Sid Lansberry hasn’t seen over the years, but none of his previous 46 teams ever put up a crooked number that approached the 13 runs the Bison scored in the first inning against Tyrone at the Bison Sports Complex Monday.

“No,” was his quick response to that question after the Bison added three runs in the second inning for a 16-1 Mercy Rule win that raised their Mountain League record to 5-3.

Eight Bison stepped into the batter’s box twice in the big inning as they parlayed seven hits with four walks, two hit batsmen and three Golden Eagle misplays.

Eli Glass belted a pair of run-scoring doubles, while Seth Bumbarger hammered a two-run homer to straightaway center field and Harrison Peacock drove in three runs with a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single.

Jake Sorbera picked up two RBIs with ground balls.

Also sending teammates across the plate were Nate Barr with a double, Caullin Reed with a single, Reese Wilson with a sacrifice fly and Hayden Williams with a free pass.

Only two of the runs off Micah Woomer and Bryce Hunter were earned.

“The thing about it was they had a couple errors but we squared up the ball,” Lansberry said. “We hit a lot of balls on the nose, which we haven’t been doing lately. So that a good sign.”

Sophomore Cade Walker was the beneficiary in just his second start and third appearance.

The left-hander recorded three strikeouts, walked two and allowed two hits, one a double by Kevin Lehner that drove in the Tyrone (3-8, 2-7 ML) run in the third inning.

“That’s his first varsity win, and I hope that’s the first of many he’ll have in the future,” Lansberry said. “He did a good job.

“We needed to get him in a game and get a good workout. All he’s had so far this year was three innings at Punxsutawney in that suspended game and two innings in relief against Bradford.

“We’ve been trying to get him in the rotation, but the weather has kind of prevented it. It was a good opportunity for him to get out there and get some confidence.”

The Bison made it an early finish with three runs in the second inning, Bumbarger singling for his third RBI before an error off Sorbera’s RBI forceout allowing Glass to score for the third time.

Alec Graham also scored three runs as the courtesy runner for Barr.

Clearfield, 7-3 overall, will head west on I-80 Tuesday for a non-league game at Brookville.
