Bison Outlast Golden Eagles 8-7 for Third Victory

TYRONE — The once-beaten Clearfield Area High School baseball team fired a pair of four-run salvos at Tyrone to cap a three-win week with an 8-7 victory in a Mountain League make-up game Saturday afternoon.

Nate Barr and Eli Glass cracked three hits apiece and winning pitcher Jake Sorbera added a pair to account for all but one of the Bison’s safeties.

Glass and Sorbera had two-run doubles, while Seth Bumbarger also had two RBIs.

Sorbera worked five-plus innings to notch his first win in his third start, giving up five hits and five runs.

Reese Wilson came on in the sixth, with the bases loaded and no outs, and surrendered  two hits and two runs in the last two innings.

Both logged two strikeouts and one walk.

All of the Golden Eagle runs were unearned because of errors, with six of the Bison’s seven miscues figuring into their scoring.

Clearfield failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation in the first inning, but losing hurler Cory Lehman wasn’t so fortunate in the third after one of his six walks and singles by Barr and Glass had the Bison in business with no outs.

After Bumbarger drove in Wilson with a sacrifice fly, Ty Bender reached on an error to fill the sacks again. Allan Myers drew a free pass for an RBI before Sorbera made it 4-0 with his two-bagger.

Tyrone (0-4, 0-3) registered singletons in its next two at-bats and would have cut into the Bison lead even more in the fourth except for a strong throw to the plate by left fielder Alec Graham that nailed Mike Stoner trying to score on Matt Savino’s single.

The Bison made the Golden Eagles pay for two misplays in the fifth with Glass’ two-run double the key hit. Bumbarger followed with an RBI single that boosted the lead to 8-2.

Wilson relieved in the sixth after Kevin Lehner singled and Lehman and Nic Light were safe on errors. He walked Stoner but two strikeouts had him poised to get out of the jam before another Bison miscue and a two-run triple by Andrew Pearson made it a one-run game.

The senior right-hander, who came into the season with just 4-2/3 innings on the mound, induced a groundout to strand Pearson at third and closed it out with two fly balls and a groundout around a single by Lehman in the bottom of the seventh.

The Bison will host Philipsburg-Osceola Monday.
