Campus Corner: Thorp’s 74 Wins CMU Invitational Title

MEN’S GOLF

VERONA — Thiel senior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) carded a four-over-par 74 to win the Carnegie Mellon University Spring Invitational at the Longue View Country Club Thursday.

The Tomcats finished fourth in the tournament that had 31 players from six schools, with the host Tartans not competing for team honors.

Point Park reigned, with Westminster and Saint Vincent taking the next two spots.

BASEBALL

BETHLEHEM — Freshman catcher Zane Morgan (Clearfield) enjoyed his best game at the plate for Juniata with three hits, one a double, to drive in three runs in a 15-8 loss to host Moravian in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader Saturday.

Morgan also scored a run in his first start as the designated hitter for the Eagles, who dropped the nightcap 7-2 to fall to 1-5 in the conference and 4-15 overall.

Morgan started behind the plate and drew a walk in two at-bats.

In 14 games, including five starts, Morgan has six hits for a .286 average with seven RBIs and five runs scored. He has thrown out three of 12 opposing runners on steal attempts.

DUBOIS — Freshman center fielder Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) was hitless in two official at-bats for Penn State DuBois in three appearances at Showers Field last week.

After sweeping Westmoreland County Community College 4-0 and 12-2 in non-conference action early in the week, the Lions split a Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference twinbill with Penn State Allegheny Friday.

They extended their winning streak to seven with a 6-3 victory in the first game before being nipped 5-4 for a 12-6 record.

Penn State DuBois sits atop the six-team PSUAC West Division at 4-1.

Morgan is hitting .219 (7-for-35) in 14 games, 10 of them starts. He has one double and two RBIs with six stolen bases in seven attempts.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

SELINSGROVE — Junior Sarah Lash (Clearfield) of St. Francis (Pa.) University recorded a javelin throw of 35.55 meters (116 feet, 8 inches) to claim 13th place in the 34th Annual Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field Saturday.

She also threw the hammer 32.50 meters (106-7) to place 19th.

The Red Flash were one of seven teams competing in the opening event of the outdoor season.

Lash’s personal records are 41.32 meters (135-6¾) for the javelin throw and 34-67 meters (113-9) for the hammer throw.
