Clarion Wrestlers Beat Curwensville 42-27

CLARION – The Curwensville wrestling team had a rough night Tuesday, as they won just two matches out of eight wrestled. Curwensville and Clarion each received three forfeits, and there were a few close matches that could have swung the whole match. Three matches were one point matches, two of which Curwensville lost. If they had won those two matches, that would have been a 12 point swing by themselves.

The loss drops the Tide to 3-9 on the season.

The match began at 120, and Curwensville won the first wrestled match at 132 when Zach Holland pinned Clarion’s Colton Zacherl at the end of the first period. Clarion returned the favor at 138 when Cutter Boggess pinned Curwensville’s Caleb Stiles in the first period as well. Following another forfeit at 145, the match was 24-6, Curwensville.

Tide freshman Jake McCracken then had a close match against Riley McMasters at 152, where he only lost by one point. Head Coach Dean Swatsworth said that McCracken wrestled well, but he just came up short.

Then Cole Bressler wrestled at 160 and lost 3-0 to Clarion’s Nick Porciello. Bressler was down 1-0 with about five seconds left in the match before he was taken down due to a desperation takedown attempt. “It was really a one point match,” said Coach Swatsworth.

Curwensville’s Nick Holbert also wrestled a good match at 170 up until the third period.

“Holbert was in the match the whole time. He gave up a takedown and was reversed in the second period, but he was wrestling a close match.” said Coach Swatsworth. Unfortunately, Holbert was then turned and pinned.

After the Tide’s Gage Roos was quickly pinned by Clarion’s Ben Smith, Clarion picked up two forfeits of their own before Curwensville’s senior Steve McClure won the last match of the night at 285. After McClure took down Clarion’s Tommy Wurster early in the first period, he eventually gave up a penalty point. Then in the third period, McClure was called for fleeing the mat. “McClure scored all of the points in his match, and he gave his opponent all of his points, too.” Said Coach Swatsworth.

After no match at 106 and Clarion received a forfeit at 113, setting the final score in Clarion’s favor 42-27.

On a positive note, the Curwensville Junior High wrestling team won their dual meet 52-12.

Curwensville will return home on Thursday when they take on the West Branch Warriors. The dual meet begins at 7pm.
