RIDGWAY – Playing perhaps its best first half of the season the Curwensville Lady Tide basketball squad hung in with Ridgway Tuesday night on the Lady Elkers’ home floor.
Down by just two at the break, 21-19, the Ridgway ladies took control of the battle, outscoring Curwensville 17-8 in the third quarter to carry a 38-27 lead into the final eight minutes.
Each team had one player control their offense and for Curwensville it was junior Madison Weber hitting for a season high 21 points while Ridgway senior Emily Fullem scorched the nets for a game high 28.
And, in a strange twist, only Weber (4 of 5) and Fullem (3 for 3) visited the free throw line.
Curwensville took an early 5-0 margin on a two pointer by Hannah Condon and a trey by Weber with 5:45 to go in the first.
The Lady Elkers then ended the first frame on an 8-2 run to take a one point lead, 8-7, into the second quarter.
Then the six foot Fullem took over with 11 second quarter points for Ridgway, but even then the Tide kept coming back as Weber hit two three point shots at the end of the second to keep upset dreams alive for Curwensville, trailing just 21-19 at the intermission.
The Lady Tide kept it close mid-way through the third quarter, behind just by one, 27-26, with 4:19 remaining until the final eight minutes.
In those final 4:19 minutes the Lady Elkers went on an 11-1 run to end third up 38-27 as the dream of the upset started to fade for Curwensville.
And just like the second period, Fullem dumped in another 11 tallies for Ridgway in the third.,
Curwensville was behind the vast majority of the final period by 10 or more.
Curwensville head coach Bob Desmett commented, “We always have that one quarter that creeps up on us in a bad way. Tonight it was the third quarter. And I thought, after playing last night, that we looked a little tired near the end of the third quarter and into the fourth.
On Weber scoring 21 of Curwensville’s 33 points, Desmett added, “A great game for Weber, but we need others to score, and we need that all of the time.”
The Lady Elkers are now 8-6 on the season while the Lady Tide lost for the tenth straight time to drop to
1-12 on the year.
There was no junior varsity game.
The Lady Tide are home on Friday against the Lady Rovers of Brockway, with the junior varsity contest tipping off at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
