Lady Tide Pick Up First Win, Top Harmony 41-35

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Lady Tide picked up its first win of the 2017-18 season Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Lady Owls of Harmony on the hardwood at Patton Hall by a score of 41-35.

The win came against a Lady Owl squad that was 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Moshannon Valley League (MVL) play.

A very happy first year Curwensville coach Bob Desmett said afterwards, “This really feels good to get our first win, but this is more for the girls than anyone else.”

The Lady Tide jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on baskets by Mikayla Warren and Madison Weber before Harmony got its offense rolling.

A basket by Lady Owl senior Liz Rorabaugh knotted the game at 8-8 with a minute to go in the first quarter and Harmony took a two point edge, 10-8, into the second frame on a bucket by freshman Dory Westover with just ticks left in the first.

Weber scored six of her 14 points in the first eight minutes to keep it close for Curwensville.

In the second quarter, the Lady Tide came out on top 13-9 and retook the lead, 16-14, with a Tarah Jacobson two pointer at the 2:23 mark.

Curwensville went up by five tallies, 21-16, with 20 seconds before intermission on a basket by Weber and a three point shot by Briana Swindell; but Rorabaugh made a three point play with just five seconds to go making it 21-19 Lady Tide at the half.

The Lady Tide would not fall behind the remainder of the MVL contest and won the third quarter 14-6 to take a 10-point margin, 35-25, into the final chapter of the game.

Sophomore Tarah Jacobson fueled the third quarter with eight points and finished as the high scorer for Curwensville with 16.

The Lady Owls did get to within four points of the Lady Tide in the fourth at 37-33 with a 6-0 run thanks to two baskets by Macy Fry and one by Rorabaugh with 1:40 left in the game.

However, it was Jacobson to the rescue with basket at the 1:10 mark to put Curwensville out in front by six,
39-33.

Rorabaugh again cut the Tide margin to just four, 39-35, with a two pointer and 54 seconds left, but once again Jacobson delivered with the final score of the game with 45 seconds to go to set the final at 41-35 in favor of the home team, Curwensville.

Desmett added, “This game tonight helped us learn to work together as a team, and I was happy with the points from Jacobson and Weber but, of course, we want everyone to score to make it difficult for the other team to defend us.”

Rorabaugh paced Harmony with 16 points while teammate Fry added 15 as the Owls dropped to 3-2 on the 2017-18 campaign.

There was no junior varsity game.

Curwensville (1-2) is back in action on Thursday, traveling to St. Mary’s to battle the Lady Flying Dutch. Listen to the Curwensville at St. Mary’s girls basketball game on WOKW-FM, 102.9, with the pre-game show starting at approximately 7:20 pm.
