Campus Corner: Stubbs Selected to All-MAC First Team

WILLIAMSPORT — Junior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) was one of five offensive linemen named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference First Team that was announced Tuesday.

The 6-2, 292-pounder, who was a All-MAC Second Team selection last year, started all 10 games for the second season in a row, anchoring a young line that had three new starters.

The Warriors averaged 308.4 yards in total offense and 24.6 points.

Their bid for a .500 finish was denied by Stevenson Saturday as the hosts prevailed 20-14 in front of 1,222 fans at Mustang Stadium in Owings Mills, Md.

The loss was the fourth by six points or less for the Warriors, who wound up 4-6 with a 4-5 MAC record.

Stubbs will enter his senior season with a streak of 25 consecutive starts since transferring from Bloomsburg University, where he redshirted as a freshman.

Sophomore defensive lineman Nate Lash (Clearfield) made one tackle in two games for the Warriors.

NEW WILMINGTON — Senior safety Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) closed his Geneva career with an eight-tackle performance in a 20-14 Presidents? Athletic Conference loss to host Westminster at Harold Burry Stadium Saturday.

Five of his stops were solo, raising his total to 22 to go with 21 assists.

He also broke up one pass for the Golden Tornadoes, who finished 2-5 in the conference and 3-7 overall.

Jacobson played a reserve role in nine games and had one sack for a nine-yard loss.

The 6-0, 195-pounder made nine starts in 10 games as a junior, recording 25 solo tackles, 16 assists, one interception and three pass break-ups.

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Junior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) remained perfect in extra point attempts with six as Worcester Polytechnic Institute claimed second place in the inaugural New England Men?s and Women?s Athletic Conference season with a 42-7 rout of host Norwich Saturday.

Then, on Monday, the Engineers (8-2, 6-1 NEWMAC) learned their season will be extended another week with the announcement they were selected to host Maritime (N.Y.) in one of two games in the second annual New England Bowl Series that matches up representatives of four NCAA Division III conferences.

Maritime (9-1) was runner-up in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference at 6-1.

Herrington also punted five times for a 34-yard average against Norwich, with three forcing the Cadets to begin possessions inside their own 20.

He had received his fourth NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week accolade earlier in the week for kicking six PATS in a 44-16 win over the Coast Guard Academy Nov. 4.

Herrington continues to lead all NEWMAC kickers in points with 69 on 42 PATs and nine field goals.

He sports a 34-yard average for 47 punts and a 61-yard average for three kickoffs.

GREENVILLE — Junior linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) assisted on one tackle for Thiel in a season-ending 51-21 Senior Day loss to Presidents? Athletic Conference rival Grove City with 1,224 fans on hand at Alumni Stadium Saturday.

In 10 games, the 5-9, 180-pounder wound up with 11 solo stops, two for losses of four yards, and two assists.

The Tomcats were 1-9 with a 1-7 PAC record.

HUNTINGDON — One of 21 players recognized on Juniata?s Senior Day, offensive left guard Jon Janocko (Clearfield) made his eighth start of the season and the 17th of his career for the Eagles, who were unable to pull out a victory for the 1,000 fans at Knox Stadium Saturday.

After they drew even with two touchdowns in the third quarter, visiting Susquehanna answered with a score early in the fourth period to win the annual Goalpost Game for the third year in a row, 28-21.

The Eagles ended up 2-7 in the Centennial Conference and 3-7 overall.

The 6-3, 270-pound Janocko subbed in eight games as a freshman and sophomore before nailing down the starting position last year.

PITTSBURGH — Redshirt sophomore fullback Erik Sellers (Clearfield) made his sixth special teams appearance for Pitt in a nationally-televised 34-31 loss to underdog North Carolina at Heinz Field Thursday night.

A crowd of 34,056 saw the Panthers fall to 4-6 in an Atlantic Coast Conference game that left them needing to beat two ranked teams, Virginia Tech and Miami, to become bowl eligible. They are 2-4 in the ACC?s Coastal Division.

MEN?S SWIMMING

WOOSTER, Ohio — Junior Michael Spencer (Clearfield) touched the wall first in one individual race and one relay as Westminster remained undefeated with a 192-102 non-conference win over The College of Wooster Saturday.

His times were 22.03 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 21.53 for the anchor leg of the Titan 200 free relay team?s 1:28.59 performance.

Spencer also placed second in the 100 butterfly in 54.32 and fourth in the 100 free in 49.41, both personal bests for the season.

BLOOMSBURG — Freshmen Tate Swanson (Clearfield) and Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) swam the first two legs for the Clarion 200-yard freestyle team that was victorious in 1:31.36 in a 109.5-90.50 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference dual meet loss to Bloomsburg Friday evening.

The splits were 22.91 seconds for Swanson and 22.08 for Steiner.

Both placed in two individual events, Swanson fifth in the 50 free in personal-record 22.90 and 100 free in 51.03 and Steiner sixth in the 50 free in 23.53 and the 100 free in a PR 52.95.

Clarion is 1-2 in the PSAC and 1-3 overall.

WOMEN?S SOCCER

ADA, Ohio — One week after celebrating Penn State Behrend?s seventh consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship, senior midfielder McKenna Aleksivich (Clearfield) and junior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) remained on the sidelines Saturday when the Lions were ousted from the NCAA Division III Tournament by No. 14-ranked Ohio Northern, 2-0.

The Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions scored both goals late in the first half to drop the Lions to 15-5-1.

Munshower had one goal and seven shots, four on goal, in 10 games, while Aleksivich was credited with one shot in four games.

Aleksivich, a member of four AMCC title teams, finished her career with four goals and 15 shots, 10 on goal, in 45 games, including two starts.

Munshower will go into her final season with nine points on three goals and three assists. She has registered 28 shots, 11 on goal, in 39 appearances.

READING — Sophomore forward Raquel Grice (Clearfield) assisted on the insurance goal in Penn State Harrisburg?s 2-0 win over No. 1 seed Lebanon Valley at Albright?s Shirk Stadium Saturday in the opener of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III Tournament.

She sent a ball through the middle that Kristen Stark converted into her second goal of the Pod 4 semifinal.

However, the fourth-seeded Lions? first trip to the ECAC tourney ended the following day when No. 2 seed Albright (12-8-1) held them to just three shots for a 2-0 victory to advance to the ECAC Final Four.

Penn State finished 12-8 with a 4-5 record in the Capital Area Conference.

Grice was second to Stark in scoring for the Lions with 11 points on five goals, including a pair of gamewinners, and one assist.

She made 15 starts in 18 games and wound up with 11 shots, nine on goal.
