MEN’S GOLF
UNIVERSITY PARK — Sophomore Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) posted back-to-back 80s over the Penn State Blue Course for a 160 total that was third best for Penn State DuBois as the Lions claimed their second Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference championship early last week.
The Lions, coached by Vic Gearhart of Curwensville and Ron Cavaline, led after the first day with a 315 and followed up with a 320 for a 635 aggregate that was matched by Penn State Lehigh Valley, forcing a one-hole playoff on No. 18 for the nine-team tournament’s title.
Penn State DuBois prevailed with a four-player total of 19 to Lehigh Valley‘s 24.
Alex Acree (76-77-153) of Clarion-Limestone and Brandon Mancuso (77-77-154) of Punxsutawney were named to the All-PSUAC First Team.
The United State Collegiate Athletic Association Championships were played in conjunction with the PSUAC Championships, and the Lions finished sixth in the 18-team field. State University of New York Delhi won the title with a 604 score, five strokes better than Cleary (Mich)
Penn State DuBois closed the season with a 48-14 record for eight tournaments.
Orsich and teammate Espy Reinard (Brookville) earned USCAA All-Academic for having Grade Point Averages of over 3.5.

WARREN, Ohio — Senior Brett Gardner (Curwensville) made his final appearance for Pitt-Bradford a special one by shooting a career-low 77 at the Avalon Lakes Golf Club Oct. 9 to help the Panthers finish fourth in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships.
Gardner, who had carded 78s several times, including in three tournaments this season, cut six strokes off his first-day score for a 36-hole total of 160 that tied for 17th among the 42 players from nine teams.
The Panthers’ top four turned in a 311 aggregate on the second day for a 623 overall that was two strokes behind third-place Penn State Altoona. Penn State Behrend took team laurels with a 588.
Pitt-Bradford earned one championship, shared another title and placed second twice in 11 tourneys.
“It was a good season, and I’m proud of these guys,” head coach Keith Stauffer was quoted in an article on the school’s golf web site. “I will miss our only senior, Brett.
“We beat last year’s score by 41 strokes, which speaks volumes of these guys’ abilities. Our score would have won the championship last year.”
Gardner, a four-year letterman, claimed All-AMCC honors twice, making the second team as a sophomore and the third team as a junior.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
HARRISBURG — Sophomore forward Raquel Grice (Clearfield) scored a key goal as Penn State Harrisburg came from behind to squeeze past Wesley (Del.) 3-2 in the first of two Capital Athletic Conference road trips last week.
Her unassisted goal on one of her two shots got the Lions even at 2-2 in the 56th minute.
The Lions (10-5) were nipped 1-0 by CAC co-leader Christopher Newport at Newport News, Va., Saturday for a 3-3 record that is good for fourth place in the conference.
Grice’s four goals rank second on the team, and she is tied for second in points with eight.
She has appeared in 14 games, including 11 starts.

ERIE — Junior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) doubled her season shots with two that were on goal in Penn State Behrend’s 4-0 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over Hilbert (N.Y.) last Tuesday.
The Lions (11-4) followed up with another shutout, 3-0 over Franciscan (Ohio) Saturday, to open a two-game lead in the AMCC standings with a 6-0 record. They have outscored those six opponents 30-1.
Munshower has played in nine games.

PITTSBURGH — Senior safety Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) made two solo tackles in Geneva’s 42-27 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to host and once-beaten Carnegie Mellon with 2,156 fans in attendance at Gesling Stadium Saturday.
The Golden Tornadoes are 2-2 in the PAC and 3-3 overall.
In five games, Jacobson has accumulated nine solo stops and six assists. He has one sack for a nine-yard loss.

GREENVILLE — Junior linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) had one tackle for Thiel in a 63-28 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to undefeated Case Western Reserve in front of 1,276 fans at Alumni Stadium Saturday.
The Tomcats tumbled to 1-5 with a 1-3 record in the PAC, which is led by CWR (6-0) at 5-0.
Maines has appeared in every game with 10 solo tackles, two for losses of four yards.

CHESTER — Junior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and the Lycoming offense struggled on the road against a stout Widener defense Saturday, as the Pride remained in the Middle Atlantic Conference race with a 31-17 victory to delight most of the 4,000 fans at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
The Warriors were held to 250 total yards while falling to 3-3 in the MAC and 3-4 overall.
Widener owns second place in the MAC at 5-1 after overcoming a 10-0 first-quarter deficit with 24 consecutive points.

PITTSBURGH — Redshirt sophomore fullback Erik Sellers (Clearfield) saw special teams action for Pitt in a 35-17 Atlantic Coast Conference loss to North Carolina State in front of 41,124 fans at Heinz Field Saturday.
The 2-5 Panthers fell to 0-3 in the Coastal Division, while the Wolfpack sit atop the Atlantic Division at 4-0.
Sellers has appeared in three games.

MEN’S SWIMMING
GROVE CITY — Freshmen Tate Swanson (Clearfield) and Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) began their Clarion careers at the Grove City Fall Classic won by the Golden Eagles with 806 points.
Swanson’s best showing in the James E. Longnecker Pool was sixth place among 41 sprinters in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.69 seconds.
He finished 10th in the 200 free in 1:54.06, 11th in the 50 free in 23.15, 15th in the 500 free in 5:18.76 and 15th in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.97.
In addition, Swanson swam a 49.66 third leg for the Clarion ‘B’ 400 free relay team that placed fifth of 15 teams in 3:27.06 and a 22.74 anchor for the ‘C’ 200 medley relay quartet that finished 11th in 1:46.87.
Steiner placed 13th in the 500 free in 5:18.76, 14th in the 50 free in 23.00, 18th in the 200 free in 1:57.12 and 28th in the 100 free in 54.99.
