Last Wednesday, he was named Thiel’s Male Athlete of the Week for winning the Penn State DuBois Invitational with a 69 at the DuBois Country Club Sept. 13.
Thiel’s top four produced scores of 334 and 345 for a 676 total, finishing 10th.

ALLISON PARK — Senior Brett Gardner (Curwensville) was Pitt-Bradford’s medalist with a 42-36-78 in the La Roche Invitational at the Wildwood Country Club Monday, Sept. 17.
Matching his season and career low landed Gardner in eighth place among 61 players from 11 teams.
The Panthers were eighth with a 334 aggregate score.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Junior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) got Worcester Polytechnic Institute off to a 3-0 start with a 20-yard field goal, but Springfield reeled off four consecutive touchdowns and went on to a 42-10 win in the opener of the first-year New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with 3,574 fans at Stagg Field Saturday.
Herrington, who tacked on the extra point after the Engineers’ lone TD in the third period, punted seven times for a season-high 33.6-yard average. His longest was a 45-yarder.
He is perfect on 13 PAT and four field goal attempts for 25 points, second for WPI (2-2).
His punting average is 32.8 yards for 22 kicks, with a long of 49 yards.

GREENVILLE — Junior linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) registered one tackle for Thiel in a heartbreaking 33-24 loss to visiting Geneva in front of 925 fans at Alumni Stadium Saturday.
Down 27-24, the Tomcats had a chance to tie the Presidents’ Athletic Conference game with five seconds, but their field goal attempt was blocked and then returned 60 yards for a touchdown by the Golden Tornadoes.
Maines has logged four solo stops for Thiel, 1-1 in the PAC and 1-3 overall.

HUNTINGDON — Senior left guard Jon Janocko (Clearfield) helped the Juniata offense pile up 346 and 40 points, but most came after once-beaten Muhlenberg had opened a 35-7 lead early in the third quarter on the way to a 56-40 win at Knox Stadium Saturday.
A crowd of 1,000 saw the Eagles (1-4) fall to 1-3 in the Centennial Conference.

WILKES-BARRE — Junior center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) anchored the offensive line as Lycoming amassed 492 yards and pulled out an exciting 44-41 victory over host King’s on quarterback Chase Williams’ 11-yard touchdown run with 41.7 seconds remaining Saturday.
The late score was the sixth lead change in the Middle Atlantic Conference thriller that attracted 2,937 fans to McCarthy Stadium.
Lycoming had lost its first three games, including two in the MAC.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
CLARION — Senior defender/forward Carlee Freeberg (Clearfield) made her fifth start of the season on defense and came off the bench to register four shots, three on goal, in the next two games as Clarion went 2-1 in 1-0 nail-biters last week.
After losing in double overtime to once-beaten Daemen (N.Y.) in a non-conference game Tuesday, the Golden Eagles shut out host Indiana University of Pennsylvania Friday and Mansfield Sunday for a three-game winning streak in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Clarion (5-4-1) is tied for fifth place in the PSAC with a 13 points on a 4-3-1 record.
Freeberg has launched six shots.

GREENSBURG — Junior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) was credited with her first shot of the season as Penn State Behrend trimmed Pitt-Greensburg 3-0 in their Allegheny Mountain Athletic Conference opener Saturday.
She has made five appearances for the Lions, who lost 2-1 to Grove City last Tuesday to finish their non-conference slate at 4-4.

HARRISBURG — Sophomore forward Raquel Grice (Clearfield) got off three shots, one on goal, in Penn State Harrisburg’s 4-1 non-conference victory over Penn College last Wednesday.
She also started Saturday when the Lions went on the road for their Capital Area Conference opener against St. Mary’s, Md., losing 0-4 to fall to 6-3.
Grice has played in eight games, with four starts, and recorded five shots.

DUBOIS — Sophomore defensive specialist/opposite hitter Lydia Opalisky (Curwensville) made her first appearance of the season as Penn State DuBois swept Pitt-Titusville 25-9, 25-9 and 25-13 Monday, Sept. 19.
The undefeated Lions (4-0) then opened their Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-1 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny at McKeesport Saturday. The scores were 25-11, 25-17, 17-25 and 25-18.
