Puerto Rico remains crippled days after Hurricane Maria, with many buildings on the US territory destroyed and millions without power.
“Puerto Rico is part of the United States, and we need to take swift action,” Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló said. “This is a major disaster.”
Officials warned it could be four to six months before electricity is restored across the island.
Maria also pounded the island of Dominica, causing “widespread devastation,” according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
Now, the East Coast is bracing for high winds from Maria. North Carolina could see the worst of the storm mid-week.
Aid organizations will continue to respond to new challenges. Maria carved a destructive path through the Caribbean just days after some of the same islands were hit by Hurricane Irma. Some organizations are combining relief efforts for Maria and Irma.
