Golden Tide Crush Smethport 48-0

SMETHPORT – Curwensville senior running back Nick Stewart returned to action Friday night after missing last weeks opening game at Cameron County with an injury.

Not unexpected, Stewart made his presence known by scoring three times and helping the Golden Tide to a 48-0 victory over the Smethport Hubbers. Stewart’s 105 yards rushing puts him 96 yards behind former Golden Tide running back Alex Holland for second place in Curwensville and District 9 history for career rushing yardage with 5639.

Quarterback Bryce Timko also scored three times while the Tide defense pitched a shutout in the road win.

Curwensville is now 2-0 in the early part of the 2017 season. Smethport dropped to 0-2.

Timko had both of Curwensville’s first quarter scores, both one yard quarterback sneaks. Avery Francisco picked up a two point conversion pass from Timko and Madison Weber booted an extra point, making the score 15-0 Tide after the first 12 minutes.

Timko had a big night throwing for 224 yards.

With 8:47 to play in the second quarter Stewart got his first touchdown of the season on a five yard run.

Timko picked up his third TD of the night with 1:41 to play before intermission on a 13 yard roll out.

Weber was also good on both second quarter extra point attempts giving the Golden Tide a comfortable 29-0 margin at the break.

The mercy rule came into effect with 10:16 to go in the third frame as Stewart went down the left sideline 56 yards to pay dirt to make it 35-0 Tide. The extra point attempt was missed.

Finding the end zone from seven yards out with 3:02 to play before the final 12 minutes, Stewart picked up touchdown number three on the evening.

Weber’s successful extra point attempt had the Tide out in front 42-0 to start the fourth quarter.

There was only one score in the fourth when junior Blake Passarelli crossed the goal line from the one yard line with 4:45 left in the contest. The PAT was no good but set the final score at 48-0 in favor of visiting Curwensville.

Curwensville has now won 12 straight battles against Smethport.

The Hubbers have now been held scoreless in its first two games, having lost to Bradford last Friday in the season opener 56-0.

The Tide get their home opener on Friday when they entertain the Sheffield Wolverines at Riverside Stadium with the kick-off scheduled for 7 pm.

Sheffield, 0-1, entertains Brockway. 1-0, today, Saturday, at 1:30 pm.

As always, listen to Curwensville football on WOKW-FM, 102.9, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:45 pm.
