Clearfield Legion Defeats Curwensville 14-4

CLEARFIELD — Winning pitcher Jake Sorbera drove in four runs and Reese Wilson and Will Myers added pairs of RBIs as Clearfield rolled past Curwensville 14-4 in six innings of Jefferson County American Legion League baseball action at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Thursday evening.

Wilson’s two-out single with the bases loaded gave the second-place Chiefs a Mercy Rule walk-off victory that raised their record to 7-4.

Sorbera worked four innings for his second win in as many decisions, ringing up eight strikeouts while surrendering six hits, two walks and three runs, two earned.

At the plate, he whacked a two-run double to left field that put the Chiefs in front 4-3 in the second inning and doubled his RBI total with a sacrifice fly in the third and a single in the fourth.

Clearfield broke it open with six runs in the third, two on a single by Myers that hopped over third base and two on wild pitches.

The Chiefs were sitting on an early finish at 13-3 after Brandon Orsich slugged an RBI double to the fence and scored on Sorbera’s second hit in the fourth inning, but the Bucks prolonged the game an extra inning with a run off Wilson in the fifth on Zach Brewer’s double to left that plated Avery Francisco.

Wilson stranded two runners with the second of his three strikeouts and then completed his two-inning relief stint with a 1-2-3 sixth.

Curwensville (0-9) owned leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in the first two frames thanks to run-scoring hits by Jake McCracken, Brewer and Von Gunden.

However, Clearfield came back both times, getting RBI singles by Seth Bumbarger and Eli Glass in the first and a sacrifice fly by Wilson after Sorbera’s go-ahead hit in the second.

Glass joined Sorbera in the two-hit column for the Chiefs.

Von Gunden, Francisco and Brewer had two safeties apiece for the Bucks.

Clearfield is booked for a doubleheader against league-leading Brookville at Punxsutawney Saturday with an 11 a.m. start.
